Seriously. im a bit lost.

the music i listened to in in the mid to late 90's i thought was hard trance was stuff like the No Respect Label put out. Mega Lo Mania stuff. now i hear that stuff and they call it Free Form.

then in the end of the 90's like 99 i heard a new sound pretty much the whole german hard trance sound with a distorted drum and a bit slower and kids try to tell me thats hardstyle.

now i hear what people call Hard Trance and i think its kinda like NRG/ Hard House. man i feel mixed up. what the heck has gone on with the trance scene? or is it just me?

Its called: Evolution.

What you say you used to listen to in the 90's WAS hard trance, just hard trance at that time....it's slowed down a lot now. Typical UK and Import Hard Trance is written at about 140bpm. Freeform nowadays is much faster trance written at 150bpm+ also known as trancecore...

Hardstyle is just hard trance but it's sound is influenced by the Dutch, Italians and the Germans and has a much harder beat to it but is still written in the same way as hard trance...it's a relatively new style of music that personally I don't like...

Examples:

Hardstyle: http://germantrance.com/content/_rams/RES5B.ram
Hard Trance: http://germantrance.com/content/_rams/DRUCK007A.ram
Freeform: http://www.nuenergy.co.uk/ram/FREAK001-A

wouldnt agree with hardstyle being dutch/italian influenced hard trance. That was the basis for it i suppose but minus the trancey riffs (usually).

Also the whole 'feel' of hardstyle is different if u know wot i mean?
You probably dont

Of course I do you tart! Just cos I think 97.8% of hardstyle is wank, doesn't mean I don't know what it is!

Hardstyle IS Dutch, Italian, German influenced Hard Trance!! FACT!

Yeah it doesn't have any trance in your right! But I can still remember when 'Hardstyle' didn't even exist!! When tracks which you would call hardstyle today was still being labelled hard trance.

Look at the warmduscher stuff, where's the trance? It's still hard trance though!! Basically what I'm saying is that Hardstyle was a term used by the Italians or Dutch or whoever first started calling it that for that style of Hard Trance, therefore coming to what I originally said, they had an influence on the sound and renamed it!!

Hardstyle: Used to be hard trance, got renamed. ;)

your missing my point. i wasnt disputing the fact that it derived from hard trance, or that early hardstyle was 'influenced' hard trance. im saying that now the genres are entirely seperate imo

I don't think they are at all! If they were entirely separate, they wouldn't get played in the same sets!

Do you not see at events: HARD TRANCE & HARDSTYLE

IMO, Hardstyle is Hard Trance...

The problem is that a lot of people are just confused to what they think is hard trance.

Cmon guys, take the word "TYPICAL" and shove it right up yer arse.

Corbz, I think you're a bit off mark.

You're trying to say that Hardstyle is actually hard trance because it evolved from it? Doesn't that mean then that hard trance should just be called trance as it evolved from that and still carries similar traits?

The point you'tr trying to make seems a little bizarre to me. Of course Hardstyle evolved from Hard Trance, I don't think anyone would dispute that, but it's now become vastly different due to producers adding influences from hard house, gabba and even techno.

To answer your question, yes I do still call hard trance 'trance'...

You don't think that there is a need to differentiate then?

I do - the difference between a Push track and a Scot Project track is quite major if you ask me, and it just saves confusion. Same as a Scot Project track and a Technoboy track. Similar but also very different in many ways.

I don't like labelling myself, but it is necessary, and hardstyle definitely needed at some point to be broken away from hard trance.

Very well said. I mean a lot of the stuff I play now that I call hard style I was calling hard trance back 2001 (i.e hennes & cold)... but I label what I play as hard style as it best suits the description.
