What bassdrums do you use other than 909 ones?

i've heard some good hard/hardcore bass drums from Roland 808, R8 and Waldorf attack.

Well ok, to elaborate.
I will, these days, use anything BUT a 909 and 808. Cos those sounds are so damn old.
Mostly I use combinations of samples (accoustic, ethnic, noise) and synth generated kicks. I use TC-Works Mercury-1, Attack, Swarplug, Dr002, Junglist, FM7 and albino.

I don't think many people even use bare 909 kicks these days.

Its usually a blend of sampled and mangled kicks, synth generated kicks and bass drones.

By the way, nice avatar zacmobile, where did you find that one?

I've got some kicks I love that don't have a definite tone to them. 90% of sounds i hear in same libraries have a bit of a note to them or a bit of horrid noise in the bottom as the pitch drops.

I've no idea why the ones without a tone sound like they do. I should stick some examples up, wish I understood how to create the beautiful sounding ones as it'd be nice to be able to tweak them a bit.

other than the 909 very few but of course i always process and equalize it
so it sounds warm nice and strong

theres a lot u can do but of course there r also lots of good kicks around

Yes I know , I used to pass throught 3 compressors and EQs in cascade my 909 BD and got by far tones of diferent ones but.. I´m tired of it.

I tried the Waldorf plug in,but it lacks of low end and punch for strong techno drums,the Virus C has a nice bassdrums,strong in middle frequencies as the emagic SE2 but too trancy for me,not hardtechno.

I guess the drums used onwadys are samples of other reocrds 909 ones that ended in totally harmonically diferent,but still I don´t get that point and sampling others never was my style

yeah 4 drums i always use hardware


rhythm box or sampler thru proc then thru the mixer they sound always more warm and nice (and strong if u want )

well ..overlap the pearl sc 40 drum kick with a dry 909

Same deal, using a collection of bass drums collected from records over the years, still have a tendancy to layer some other kicks/clicks/percussion hits on top in fruity to give each one a different sort of sound from the last time I used it....

Really want to crack on with making my own, but for now this is working very nicely for me.
