depends on what you're tryoing to acheive. If you're writing a techno track rather than a dance song then no more than a day or two allowing a day a month later to make rewite it.

forever and a bit more
im terrible when it comes to finishing tracks.
infact out of around 6 years making music ive only ever finished 3 tracks and im still sure i could do more to improve them.

New years resolution finish what i start.

3 days tops for your 4x4 techno stuff
3 days to 2 weeks for the more experimental stuff

Probably about 3 days throwing things up and building something.
Then around 2-4 weeks tearing it to pieces.

the main bones happen in around 8hrs. Structural process takes around 4hrs. Fine tweaking and automation 4hrs. Quality process (glitches, random stuff etc) 2hrs.

Leave it a couple of days. go back and listen with fresh ears - make adjusments as necessary, 4hrs

Bouncedown and testing on various systems, 2-3days depending on which of my mates will let me test out on their hi-fi's/PA

Remaster according to test findings..

Burn and offer up....

I know that sounds a bit scientific, but thats hows i's does it's
