Is there any way to replicate nice, ringing crunchy hats without a mixing desk and outboard compressor?

I've thought of sampling, which could be the only answer, but I'd like to replicate if possible.

Crunchy...could try running them through a bitcrusher.

Ringing...could try some creative EQing and a touch of reverb or delay.

Or, use better samples. ;)

(There's lots of things which will work up there in place of high hats...anvils, tambourines, shakers, bells, water chimes, high pitched sine stabs, white noise....in fact, you could try mixing in a quiet anvil with the hat, as not much rings more than anvils.)

well, what I have sounds pretty good, but I was just listening to what I've done in comparison to a Carlos rios track, and the difference is huge. Everything else is much of a muchness....

I'm unsure of how to produce that really rinsing hat effect :cry:

It's like 76.102Hz or something, off the Hardsignal 002 ep. I'm not trying to do exactly the same thing here, I just would rathe rfind out if you can replicate that sort of sound digitally.

I've seen it done using a mixing desk and outboard compressor, with the attack on the compressor set very low. When I do something similar in Cubase it doesn't quite have the same effect. I'm guessing that it may not be able to be done and I'll have to sample and affect heaps....

that Mulero one sounds like high pitched ride cymbals, layered with a bunch of hats and over compressed. and being on vinyl, the high frequencies sound a bit funny too.

you'll be able to do it in cubase. i'm gonna go mess around and see if I can come up with something similar.

Is that sort of what you're after with the highs? It's not completely ringing but I couldn't be ****ed messing up the track anymore :D

that's what it sounds like to me as well.

compressing the crap out of the ride with a short attack and short release will turn it into an almost steady blast of noise. you could then send the ride and hats to another compressor with more conservative settings (medium attack and release) to get them to blend and move together.

raising the pitch of the 4th open hat gives it a nice flow as well

thats assuming you using a 4x close/open pattern
experiment with pitch changes and velocity :love:

i also got a nice pattern by doing this


1 0 1 0 --- 1 0 1 0 --- 1 0 1 0 --- 1 0 1 0 --- close hats
0 0 1 0 --- 0 0 1 1 --- 0 0 1 0 --- 0 0 1 1 --- open hats
0 0 1 0 --- 0 0 1 0 --- 0 0 1 0 --- 0 0 0 0 --- medium tom
0 0 0 0 --- 0 0 0 0 --- 0 0 0 0 --- 0 0 1 0 --- high tom

put an accent on the beat and the offbeat, a higher velocity will do

Use a good ride hat,remove bass freqs add a touch of reverb then give it some deep compression fast attack,slow release to make it kind of breath........or try reverb settings with alot of reverb and a super low dry output so it floats over everything and sounds nice and distant.
For some variation bounce it down(render the ride)and the reverb tail should be missing on the first or last hit.Or the pitching up or down idea is a good one

another good way and i love this way....

wire whatever loop ur usin through a Malstrom in reason.... ull b amazed!! especially if u flick through the patches

ull only get a response from the 2 filters, the distortion and modulator B. tempo sync the filter control in modulator B and mess with the rate and waveforms.

the distortion will give u a nice crunchiness

Had some luck messign about with shtuff last night. I'll post up the (now complete) track as soon as I find a place to host it, and get some of you good people's feedback.
