Ok, well, to try to broaden peoples horizons a little, and to show that techno can be more than just Boom-Tish Boom-Tish (Although there is nothing wrong with the Boom-Tish).

I thought we could have a Suggested Listening Area, where people could recommend a new album or single release, or a particularly special Live PA or Mix, that is forward thinking, and then we could discuss, kinda like a book club.

Thanks to XFive for this Idea.

Online links to the albums or singles can be posted here.

it's not techno...it's modern classical, but you'll notice the rhythmic ideas and use of LFO (all done with acoustic instruments) is crazy techno...

My first recommendation

William Burroughs - Dead City Radio
(with Sonic Youth, John Cale, Chris Stein and more)
There are audio links down the page

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000001FYF/qid=1108425450/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_11_1/026-1985349-1984459

Without Burroughs, his writings and the Cut Up technique developed in the 50`s, there may never would have been the sampling and scratching of hip hop, and the early collage of futuristic sounds that was techno. His writings and philosophies, align very much with techno in so many ways, and his audio recordings and collaborations are fantastic.

Good sticky Steve

Here are a couple of my suggestions, all jazz, being thats probably the one genre I listen to just as much, if not more so than Techno:

Charlie Hunter Trio - Friends Seen And Unseen (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0002ABT4Y/qid=1108426172/sr=8-3/ref=pd_csp_3/002-7973703-7239224?v=glance&s=music&n=507846)
Medeski, Martin, and Wood - End of the World Party (Just in Case) (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002QO4B8/qid=1108427671/sr=2-1/ref=pd_ka_b_2_1/002-7973703-7239224)
Cal Tjader - The Best of the Concord Years (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0001LYH1G/qid=1108427749/sr=2-3/ref=pd_ka_b_2_3/002-7973703-7239224)

I don't ever play CDs on repeat... but the Charlie Hunter one got me good.

Enjoy ;)

Yeah, this is a great album. For anyone listening to it for the first time you really need a bit of patience as on the face of it it can sound sort of 'samey'. Listen to it for a while or all the way through and it is a very rewarding listen

While Burroughs cut up style's influence in the world of literature is undeniable, I think its a bit of a murky association to draw it to music. John Cage and Pierre Schaeffer were messing with taking found sounds long before Naked Lunch was even a thought. Burroughs was just a famous resonating point for an idea that had been bouncing around human consciousness for sometime.

I¬m loving all this stuff up here, fantastic.

I`ve heard a load of stuff I didn`t know about now, and I`m feeling quite inspired.

I heartily recommend this band to anyone.
They have inspired me for years.
The Young Gods.
True masters of the sampler.
They defy categorisation, but recently their music has become more organic and spacial.

Does the burroughs album have a track called "Words of advice for young people?"

I had that played to me many years back, never found out what it was though.

"Do not offer sympathy to the mentally ill. Simply tell them firmly, 'I am not paid to listen to your drivel. You are a terminal fool."

That line always stuck in my memory. The man had a way with words...

It's a continous ambient track for 60 minutes or thereabouts. Basically it's a moving wall of sound which on one hand can sound like rain, and the next moment like running water, and so on. Pretty conceptual stuff I guess, but very nice to listen to if you're in the mood.

excellent stuff that sunil. My housemate was playing it in the kitchen. i went downstairs and thought birds were singing. went back upstairs, came down again and i thought there was a ghost in the kitchen.

on the thought of being scared. I can watch any film on my own in the dark etc and not be scared. But about a year and a half ago i listened to a piece of music by coil, i think it was on unnatural history. i couldnt listen to it on my own in the dark. i tried so many times but as soon as this woman started to scream i simply couldnt handle it. It starts with a womans distant verbed voice. the voice slowly becomes more prominent then she starts screaming. But these are no ordinary haloween screams. It sounds like she is being attacked or something, real scary stuff. I will try and find the track name for ya.

What was the last piece of music that provocked such an emotion for you lot?

Mine would be listening to John Convertino- mass in latin. Extremeley sad music. Made me weep.

It's a continous ambient track for 60 minutes or thereabouts. Basically it's a moving wall of sound which on one hand can sound like rain, and the next moment like running water, and so on. Pretty conceptual stuff I guess, but very nice to listen to if you're in the mood.

Love the Monolake stuff, going to buy that Axis Carbon soon woowoo.

Im so glad theres music out there like this. I hope to be the female version of Robert Henke one day  Sound designer, Ableton researcher... good producer

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00008PRS8/qid=1114899914/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/104-9708505-0634313?v=glance&s=music&n=507846

Very nice, diverse mix of his repoitoire.

I think I still prefer some of the more streamlined albums though as they give you a complete sense of what he was into at that very moment.

a few recent releases that make me really happy.

1) Huntemann - Sweet Sensations (GIGOLO153)
the b-side "Femme Fatal" kicks ass electrostylee, epic percussion and pure analogue funk across the lead + 808 claps for that extra bit of smile.

2) Si Begg - Peel Sessions (NOODRAD001)
another stupid music release that begs for a big sound system. ragga, bass, film interludes, dapper off-beats. genius.

3) Arabian Prince - Innovator (LONE0005)
DBS remix in the house... vocoder madness on an arabian nights trip - dark backdrop with rolling kicks and stompy rides.

4) Kardon - Jeans On (WLR003)
Remix of the infamous neil diamond 70's hit + subbass. nuff said?

5) Claudius Kantner - Guitar Groove (EV001)
"Guitar Groove" and "Hutschi Mini" have just the nicest clinky-clonky-bong jolly rhythm and to "The Crew" is rolling and dark - with more clonkity clonky.

6) Cannibal Cooking Club - Recooked Vol.1 (CCC05)
remix madness from TSR, Der Totmacher & Jens Bremeier, Queaver & Versis and Bill Youngman. you know, the usual wonked-to-fuk nonsense.

7) Various Artists - Musick Vol. 5 (SHITKATA59)
Volume 5 from the more straight clubby end of Shitkatapult without forgetting to mess-up and roll the funk. Go bassline! on 'Autolump - God's Speed'.

8) Duoteque - EP One (BOXER25)
The title track is a sloppy stomper with more subass and vocoder. real emotional lifter, chopped snares and managled electrofonic whah-whah. nice.

DJ Spooky and Dave Lombardo : Drums of Death (http://www.thirstyear.com/album_detail.php?artist=DJ%20Spooky%20and%20Dave%2 0Lombardo&album=Drums%20of%20Death)

DJ Spooky that Subliminal Kid, has teamed up with Slayer skinsman Dave Lombardo to see what one of the world's best DJs could do with beats supplied by the best thrash metal drummer of all time.

As if that isn't enough audio warfare, legendary Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid and Public Enemy number one Chuck D have provided their stunning sounds to mix. To bring it all together prolific electronica artist Meat Beat Manifesto has been tapped to co-produce Drums of Death along with DJ Spooky.

It's produced and engineered by none other than Mr. Jack Dangers... and he plays instruments on every track.

Great stuff

Good sticky Steve

Here are a couple of my suggestions, all jazz, being thats probably the one genre I listen to just as much, if not more so than Techno:

Charlie Hunter Trio - Friends Seen And Unseen (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0002ABT4Y/qid=1108426172/sr=8-3/ref=pd_csp_3/002-7973703-7239224?v=glance&s=music&n=507846)

Enjoy ;)
