View Full Version : Ongoing Remix Competition

xfive
15-03-2005, 08:36 PM
We're going to start a little remix competition in here. The frequency can be one week or more depending on how many participants we have.
The idea is to download a bundle of loops and samples, make your own track with them, and post up the results back to THIS thread.

Every once in a while we will agree on a winner, and the winner will then get to create their own bundle for the next round.

This is nothing serious, and is supposed to be something fun to do in your spare time. I think it will be interesting to see everyone's creativity flow ;)

Thanks to jesus for this idea!

Well I have to reload my PC. Then I can get down to business on this thing. Someone told me yesterday that I could remove the MBR from my old drive, but in doing so I lost the NTLDR from my freshly loaded drive

Oh well think ill give it a bash!!!!

What are the rules for this? Do you have to use all the samples? can you add your own, or layer vsts etc,, or is it use these samples only?

Please advise ..........over

xfive
16-03-2005, 06:19 PM
Well I'd say treat it like a regular remix... use them... whichever bits you want... add your own.. etc... vsts.. samples.. whatever...

If people think there needs to be a rule about using all the samples then we can say so.. but as long as no one tries to be a monkey and only uses a kick drum sample and everything else is their own I think we'll be ok ;)

I finished a remix off on Friday but forgot to upload it anywhere, so here I present my cacky remix work (http://www.atkt71.dsl.pipex.com/Mirsha%20-%20BOA%20remix%2001.mp3). I was trying to do something a bit different with it from what I normally do as I'm still getting to grips with production so it seemed a fine way to expand my horizons a bit.

to hear that from you it must be a big compliment for me processing the sounds that well that you can't recognise your own samples.
But believe me i did use some samples. And if you're not into my techno I can understand that. It's the real minimal Tresor kinda feel. (Voodoo, Ben Sims, old Space DJz sound)

Anyway, it's not a written rule that I have to specifically use your drumsamples, if I can make it myself. The only characteristic tunes i've heared from your parts are the noisy synths, and ofcourse the voice. But didn't dig the voice very well, so left it out.

About the drive:
Are you serious there is no drive here??
I'm puzzled.

dirty_bass
21-08-2005, 05:23 PM
By no drive, I mean no momentum to the beat.
The hats are stright with no swing to them, and the rest of the beat is just the kick. I prefer more than just boom-tish in me techno.
That`s not to say people that are into the more marching type techno wouldn`t appreciate it.
And I also have strong opinions about remixes.
I think they should contain recognisable parts of the original, otherwise it just becomes an original track rather than a remix.

Yeah I think we have a good discussion point over here!
"What's a remix, and when is it called an original track?"
Because we could mention countless examples of remixes,
where the sounds are processed that extreme, that you can't
pick out the origin anymore. Especially with hard techno and dark atmospheric techno.

I did a remix for a German label _Rohformat.
The track I had to remix had a real characteristic bassline.
That was the thing to use in the remix. The rest of the drums and stuff was all myself.

I think with techno, the notion of the remix has got silly.
It`s a cost efective way of getting extra tracks onto release etc.
But in some cases, the remixers just blow off with their own ego and make totally original tracks. In my eyes this isn`t a remix at all. If the original samples are no longer recognisable in any form, then there is no audible link to the original track, so what is the point?
Some people take it as a way of just showing their skills and mashing up shit. I think it actually shows less skill. To effectively and intelligently rework the samples you are given into a new version that still has the feel and elements of the original, is real skill.
However with some remix jobs, you are given so little to work with that it makes the job difficult.
I`ve been asked to do remixes and have been given like, 2 samples and shit, so I just ended up not doing it.

Loving working on this their is somthing to cover all the freaqs in the sounds provided ;) which gave me an insight in to what I should be using in future projects so thanks for that.

Still needs a few vital sounds somthing to compliment the metal hit perhaps(witch is basicaly the lead at the moment)
And need to do somthing with the vocal regarding timing and perhaps some sort of effects proccessing.
Also theres not enuff movment after the break.

Anyway hope you like so far will finish this week ;)
