WIN XP / AUDIOPHILE 2496 MIDI TIMING?

running a yamaha ux256 and the maudio audiophile midi in cubase (both vst5 and sx) plays ok when i program in step time - when i record realtime, the midi gets pushed forward a bit - its not delayed its moved to the left slightly so it plays too early?

any ideas on this at all -

how do i turn off the stupid fackin gm soundcanvas thing that comes with xp / sx ?
