Well, the obvuios choice would be spectrosonics atmosphere, but it takas up 3gig of space and you can really change the sounds  I usuallay do most of my soundscapes from my huge collection of Pc game samples.

either atmoshpere or the crystal synth. The presets on the crystal synth arn't that good but its a really powerful synth if you actually make your own sounds. Also its a free download

although I tend to use more conventional synths, and really screw with them with fx.
You really can`t beat a good sample library of field recordings though.
Or do your own.

most sonically interesting noises come from 'real life' sounds, rather than synthesis.

mangling vocal samples can give good results....

Just fields?

I find lakes and beaches make good recordings also.

Yeah a good mike and decent MD is all you need. And a car with a big bag of different shaped stick and poles in the boot. Drive to nearest river which runs underneath motorway/road and go bananas breaking stuff /hitting things/screaming underneath a bridge. Dont forget to hit record like we did.

Thats quite interesting auctually, me and splask have been meaning to get around to making some field recordings. I'm always sitting on the bus or whatever and think "that would sound great with a 4:4 behind it!"

there's a plugin named 'field' by tweakbench:

http://www.tweakbench.com/screens/field.jpg

field is a multisample based ambience generator. using original field recordings by twerk, field allows you to generate suitable backing ambience for any track. version 1.1 adds a new interface, more responsive EQ, and small performance enhancements.

Sun Ra
Ambient texture generator.
It's based on a dual synthesis engine ( 1substractive oscillator + 2 wave players), completed with several randomization options and a battery of built-in effects

I make most of my soundscapes with quotes or vocals from movies, interviews and other things. Also very handy are just bizar samples from games etc..
