Your best bet is reading what tracks people posted below as hardstyle.

It's Italian Hard House.

Same speed as trance, different formula, almost always seems to be a 4 beat break before the tune kicks in. I think I remember hardcore being slightly faster than Hardstyle though.

Most of it sounds too samey for me, I prefer the more technoey side to it coz this goes better at the end of a hard trance set rather than breaking into hoovers and horns.

Thanks for quoting me Elle  :D

Hardstyle is splitting into it's own little subgenres now, so none of the above answers are wrong, even though they are varied in description.

Stuff by Technoboy is what I would class as pure hardstyle. If you want to hear a track that is 100% hardstyle, go find Tuneboy - Housensation on Titanic records.

You also have the hard house flavoured hardstyle which Trance Addict mentioned, mostly dutch tracks. Good examples of this are tracks by Dj Isaac or stuff on Scantraxx or Seismic.

Then we have the techno influenced hardstyle being produced by the Italians, mostly on 59 records or Italian Masters of Hardstyle labels. Uncompromisingly hard, and sounding very industrial.

This is the stuff that also sounds almost like slowed down gabber, as Stride very truly mentioned. Most tracks by Lorenzo De Preti fit this description.

P.S - Mark, please don't go putting all of these into a seperate forum...

Hardstyle for me is just slowed down techno, with a distorted kick drum and loads of stupid, annoying noises, hoovers and all.

Addict
13-06-2003, 01:29 PM
Slowed down techno? Some of it's faster than techno.

DJ Corbzy
13-06-2003, 01:33 PM
Well, it might be faster, but techno sounds faster because it has more percussion. But anywhos Hardstyle is gash.... :P

Hardstyle doesn't sound anything like techno to me, its closer to hard house in my opinion.

Yeah I did generalise there didn't I. It's not all like that. I love Lorenzo de Preti's stuff, that's proper techno trance.

I think there is a lot of hardstyle that is a bit hard housey but there is also a lot of quality, that sounds nothing like it..

ok peeps, here's my rant for the day...

i think hardstyle is so fresh and new that everyone has their own version of what it's about. besides, it's evolving very fast at the moment. first you think it's italian... then you think it's dutch.. then you think it's hard house.. then you think it's techno.

what interested me about hardstyle at first is that is sort of encompassed 'hard' music. i'm sure we'll see this more and more as time goes on...

like with any genre i suppose (apart from cheesy pop music)... it's not CRAP - you're just not listening to it right. and that's your own limitations - not the music.

people are out there making hardstyle because they love it. not because it sells because, believe me, it doesnt. you have to respect that, surely???

no no no no no no no no no no no no!!!!!!!! don`t compare it to techno!!!!!!

Carl
15-06-2003, 01:38 PM
I dont dislike hardstyle, and I wouldnt say its 'crap'' Mark, but dont you find a lot of it really monotonous & 'samey'?. It can definitely add spice to the melodic movement of your hardtrance sets though, I have witnessed the crowd response many times as a slice of hardstyle is added into the equation and it certainly seems to bring everyone off :D

Bang Bang Bang Bang Bang Bang hahahahahaha

MARKEG
16-06-2003, 09:26 AM
no i wasn't comparing it to techno - just saying some tracks can have techno elements in there.

yes carl, you're right. some of it sounds well too samey and it's boring... but that's the thing - you have to find the good stuff amoungst the shit. it's always been the same with every style???

DJ Backlash

Hardstyle is hard trance, but producers have pushed the boundries so far out, thers no limits on how hard or twisted the sound of hardstyle is.

I know exactly what your saying Mark, you have to be able to differentiate between the good stuff and the bad.Just like with trance & techno :P

Ello all....hows it going.......cool thread....

this is a collectin of stuff from a dutch forum when I was tryin to find out where hardstyle came from ages ago......not massivley relevant, but still
'in order to define something u must understand where it came from' morpheus type bullshit

Hardstyle was born on the Q-Dance party's in The Netherlands
The organisation Q-Dance is responsible for the big inpact in the hardhouse scene.

The "Qlimax" concept was first introduced in june 2000. First it was all a little strange, but Q-Dance wanted to forward this "new concept of music" and they organized several party's like Qlimax, Qlubtempo and later X-Qlusive. The Qlubtempo tickets were sold out 3 weeks before the party and was a big succes.

The "Qlimax-sound" became populair in a high-speed tempo, and is getting more hardstyle-lovers every day. Its getting Xtremely populair outside Europe. Switzerland, Austria even Canada is infected with the Hardstyle-virus.

Hardstyle started of as a mix of oldstyle and UK sounds. Slowly productions from Germany and Italy, which had a stronger bassline and a harder kick, started to reach the Dutch dancefloors.

I think there are 3 main players in the hardstyle sound...
Germany - Derb, Uberdruck etc.
Italy Technoboy, DJ Vortex, Trance Generators etc.
Holland - Luna, Isaac, Dana etc.
