You have to upload it somewhere. If you have webspace with your isp, then i suggest you should use that. You will need to know the server address, which will be something like Aratron@ftp.blueyonder.co.uk and you will also need your username and password to upload it. Once it is uploaded you should be able to view it on your space and get the link to the file..

What folders do you have in your webspace. You should have one name "www" or "public_html". You will have to upload it into there for it to show on the net..

you can probably reference your image now, like http://www.araton.pwp.bluetonder.co.uk/yourimage.gif or http://www.araton.pwp.bluetonder.co.uk/yourimage.jpg

Try putting either of those into the address bar (obviously replacing the 'yourimage' part with the actual name of your file)

If it either opens the image or prompts you to download it's in the right place and you will be able to use it as an avatar.

Ayup, you need to first of all resize them to 100 pixel wide, then you can upload them to this site to get optimised versions - http://www.netmechanic.com/GIFBot/optimize-graphic.htm

If you have photoshop or paintshop pro you can optimise them there as well, but i need to know what you use before i can give instructions

thanks woody.
i have learnt a bit about stuff in the last week.
i just opened my pictures up with the standard 'paint' program and then stretched/skewed the pics until they are 100 x 100. simple really.
i would like a better program with more features to enhance the picture quaility tho.
you can erase those pics you hosted for me now.
thanks for that - that was a real lifesaver ;)
see you in december im gonna come up lester on the train , so i don't have to drive back !!
