Been trying to get my head round some music theory at last. Chord sequences ect.

This is the result, a big proggy. not finished yet , just looking for some ideas.

Whelp the bass in this is pretty present. The kick needs to be way more audible, maybe with some eq or sidechaining with the bass.
There are also a lot of gaps in the frequency range, as the hats are very prominant and sort of sit ontop of the whole mix, instead of blending in.
The midrange is very muddy and needs some subtractive eq action to clean it up.

I think it would sound much better once cleaned up ;)

Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment on this. I spent all of my time working on the notes for this and didn't really spend much time mixing it down. I will work on this. I had the perc side chained to the kick not the bass, I will change this and work on my eq.

Once again thanks for your help

not bad, i have little problems with describing in english what i want to say, but xfive got the point in his post with everything - "hats are very prominant and sort of sit ontop of the whole mix, instead of blending in", i couldn't write it better :)
and i think ride cymbals are missing somewhere, i hear that they are in the background, but don't feel them.

anyway nice track, need a little work with it :)

Well I have tryed to take the advise given here on board.

I have done the following.

Sidechaned the bass to a kick.
Reduced the hats in level.
Eq,ed the ride so it cuts through the mix better.
EQ,ed the pads to unclutter the mids.
EQ,ed the Synth line so it sits better.

I still need to work on some edits for the percussion

anyway do you think that this is an improvment

not bad at all. i like the pads but i think they need to come out more. if not by lightening up on the eq then maybe by an auto-pan or some other spatial effect.

musically it mostly works, though i felt that by the end of the tune i was becoming a bit frustrated because there was a harmonic tension that was built up but not released by coming back to the tonic strongly enough.

what are you using for a limiter, btw? i think you might have pushed it a bit hard, as on my system i see inter-sample overs (clipping the d/a even though no single samples are over).

Done some perc edits, and some auto pan on the pads, not sure if I have over done this.

Well this does sound better, but there's still a big gap in frequencies between the percussion and pads, and the hats. Like Evil G said, try opening up the eq on the pads, and also some of the other pieces as well.. just to give the mid-hi end of the mix more body.. then the hats won't seem to be floating ontop of everything else.
The bass could also go quite a lot deeper still ;)

Stylewise this is nice.very energetic

Think you could get busy with some eq carving with the percussion to good effect.
Also think that some sort of stereo widening on the pad would work a treat.

I have just Done another mix down, I think it sounds better than before. I have done, quite alot of eqing and put some verb on the pads to widen them.

Anyway i have heard this tune too many times now, and am going to give it a break for a few days.

Cheers for all the advise given, I have learnt a lot from this.

Ok the bottom end in these little headphones I have is terrible so I won't comment on that until after listening on monitors. But the mids and highs blend together mucho better now.
