View Full Version :  Jeff Mills ??? ( 1

16-10-2002, 08:01 PM
I'm just not impressed with Mills. I heard a set of his on Radio 1 about 3 months ago and it was awful. Then I heard he played a terrible set up in Scotland the following weekend.

I used to think Mills was god. The early UR stuff was amazing and Waveform 1+3 blew me away. I'll never forget what he did to me when I first saw him DJ at Tribal Gathering.

But times move on and so do people's taste in music. I haven't ruled him out, but he's just not my bag anymore.

Never seen him either, not the biggest fan of his productions... like the bells & ufo but thats it really.

Yeah that mix on radio1 was terrible and I have heard that he has been playing rubbish recently, but I have also been told that he has been playing brilliant???? don`t know which one is true... if his john peel mix is anything to go by then he must be playing bad.

moments of brilliance

moments of absolute tosh

lots of "flogging a dead horse"

Mills do something to impress me again, stop living on past glory.

from the sets i've gotten from him this past year, he's been hit or miss. there are quite a few blatant mistakes in some of the sets. I respect the 3 deck wizardry, but when it aint working for ya... pull out. that, and my only other complaint is to freakin retire "the bells" and "knights of the jaguar". why must he play them in EVERY single set.

the 3 constants of life - death, taxes, and mills dropping the bells and jaguar.

Well, I´m not really into his new style that much, but he´s definately a great DJ. Waveform 1 is still one of my favorites.

...And I´ve been looking for that last track of his I Love Techno 99 Mix Set for years now and still haven´t found out the name

I know all of the true techno purists would rip my head off for this but heres my say.

MILLS-OLD F***ING SCHOOL-dude the guys done ALOT for techno. so be it. He has done a thing in the last little while that turned my head even one bit.

I have heard a mountain of bad stories about mr mills and his hollywood attitude and i frankly think it stinks.

There are a mountain of detroit techno guys still around playing at MOUNTAINS of parties. I say "YOU ALL SUCK". Retire somewhere and let some of the NEW BREED of techno producers show you how this game is played.

And yes i have seen mills play in Toronto Canada at industry, HE SUCKED ASS, i have heard his set at LIQUID ROOM, its not even worth the cd its pressed on.

Man that was some pretty negative feedback, no?

damn................

i've seen jeff mills many times over the past few years and i've never ever been disapointed by him. there are very, very few djs that are both excellent producers and djs.

miromiric.
28-11-2002, 04:10 AM
he taught us about minimalism

his production is still pushing over the edge

but his dj sets are like a 16 years old kid who is trying to succeed in the world of music at all costs. i mean, doesn`t he get bored of playin` bells in every set? 3-4 sets a week, 6-7 bells a week, let`s say about 25-30 bells a month, etc. for years now. what is he trying to prove with his sets? i dunno.

He's lost that magic spark these days. No way near as good as he used to be.

But Jeff Mills from 1994 - 1996 was probably the greatest techno DJ that has ever graced the decks. Not one DJ over the years has matched the intensity that man achieved on the decks when he was at his peak back then.

When he's bad, he's bitterly disappointing. When's he at his best, he's untouchable.

Although U can have several examples I have 2 agree that u rarelly find some1 who is both a good DJ & Producer.

Has 2 Mr. Mills I have 2 say that I saw him recently in Lisbon and I must stress that he played a lot of new stuff, almost none of his tracks (exept if they were unreleased), no Bells, he played a lot slower than the usual hard paced, fast' n' furious were used 2!! But still I think he really had something going... The crowd wasn't really moving and I'm sure they would have just left if it was some1 else djing... BUT shouldn't we congratula-te him 4 showing something different, new ways no sounds, don't we always complain that crowds ain't that open minded!?! Than I guess we should b happy that some1 can show' em something a little different!!

I felt he could have donne a little more, he could had been a little more intense at times.

BUT I realise he lives all trends, music/ Djing/ prodution etc.. and a 10 fold fater rate than us!! So he is a step in front of us... DON'T get me wrong I'm not trying 2 say he's the future and he are just not inteligent enought.. I'm just saying he is going 4 other things, still that's not what I admire, but I do admire the fact that he does not follow trends or really worrie 'bout them... He does what the hell he wants having only 1 rule, staying true 2 himself, He's not looking for approval or anything, he also doesn't expect 2 b looked at has the innovator. He is an extraordinary concerned and aware person, I have never had any1 thank me so much 4 a promo, and I'm preaty sure he had no clue who the fu** I was.

He just wants 2 keep being able 2 do what he loves, if others like it or not is just a bonus!!

So, I do agree he's not playing and Djing the way he used 2, but is that necessarily bad? I prefered the "old" Mills but I have the highest respect 4 this man! And I make sure I pay close atention 2 what he has 2 say!!

Wouldn't we b congratulating him if we liked what he was playing but every1 else didn't! Wouldn't we b saying that his got Bal** 4 not straying his path!?

My 2 cents,

Z

beyer - dull at best these days. not as inventive as mills.

surgeon - totally lost his edge as a dj. saw him play here in nyc a few weeks ago and was sorely disappointed to hear him play the same set i'd heard thet last time he was in new york over a year ago.

sims - ok but highly overrated as a dj. doesn't bring the 909-ings.

yada yada. glenn wilson might come close but he usually (or exclusively) does live sets. if it weren't for jeff, most of the younger generation would sound completely different.

sims overrated, shut up you muppet, he is consistantly better than mills.

maybe it`s because you live in america & your techno scene is tiny...you don`t get to see dj`s like sims & surgeon very often.

i hear your point mark. Mills had a small influence on me as well. And yes i do respect him for what he has done for techno.

But i will stand to my guns and say. YOU SUCK AS A DJ MR. MILLS!!!!! MUAHAHAHHAHHHAHAHA

I think Mr Mills should be the first to apply for the DJ LICENSE

when it touches down in the states.

--------------------------------------------------------

yup, that's so true. Mills gave me the key that unlocked my mind to hard, loopy techno - there's no doubt about that. he might not be the same now, but like our man Mig L says, you simply have to respect him.

DJZeMig_L
01-12-2002, 03:36 PM
Hey P.

I Have no wish 4 any "wordfight", What I think u must realise is that Mills was already doing all the tricks and general deck wizardry long b4 any1 else! I might even add that some of the more enlightend Djs have learned a lot with this man, or with people that learned with this man.

I remember looking into djing in a totally different way after I saw him dj! I do agree with ya, Mills does miss a lot, some of the mixing is just a tad 2 ruff... But the fact is that most of us know about this tricks very early and toy around with' em, loads and loads, so it bcomes easy, almost like a 2nd nature, they r no longer extraordinary!!

Then again if u listen 2 a Dave Clarke set, u could almost say the same, but still they were there doin' it long b4 we could propertly beatmatched!!

4 that also I have a huge respect, that doesn't mean I'm deaff, I can still hear all the mistakes, but I pay my respects 2 a man u consistently changed the way we Dj and Produce!!

Esox Lucius
03-12-2002, 05:47 AM
and sims certainly is not over rated, had people on another board try and tell me ade fenton is rubbish & doesn`t deserve his atomic jam residency!! utter bollocks, ade is one of techno future stars, he is getting bookings all over the world now & is runnig a very sucessfull label (advanced)

what are your views on ade, anyone?

was joking actually. hope some of you managed to catch mr. jeff play @ bugged out or atomic jam recently and he played an exceptional set. speaking of which, justin robertson was here last week with hatwin + väth. it went off! i have new rizpek robertson. lots of fun.

btw, dave the drummer is the one i compare everyone else to

I'm just hyper confused over why Ade did that mix for Fergie.... I dunno there's alot of questions I'd like to ask him next time we speak...

Esox Lucius
04-12-2002, 01:23 AM
in a way me too, but you got to think would you turn down a chance to play on radio1 mark?... in theory it is nice to say no, but when you got offered the chance to play your music on the uk`s biggest station would you turn it down??

04-12-2002, 03:33 AM
well said tf...

i myself am in a very similar dilemma at the mo with a big UK superclub. and even then my immediate reaction to someone like Ade playing on R1 is 'why?'. yes, course you would do it. even though you know Fergie is representing techno in the wrong way, you'd take it cause you'd think 'well, i'm different -i'll represent it in the right way'. when all you're really doing is opening up your arse to be raped by commercialism. but yet, you're convinced you can steer things the right way - but can you? that's the question. and none of us will know the answer to that until we're in the same position.

Esox Lucius
04-12-2002, 04:51 AM
yeah I agree with you, is the club slinky?... billy nasty played there a few months ago, haven`t heard of anyone slating him for it though....from what i have heard they all enjoyed his set.... i could see you going down well there as your sets have lots of energy, like billy`s.

I understand how you feel about it though, it`s a tough one to decide.

I 4 1 think its really cool 2 remix any pop star AS LONG AS U CAN DO WHAT THE FE*K U WANT WITH THE REMIX!!

1 - this can b like total revenge from pop

2 - showing different thinks 2 an otherwise non exposed audience

3 - One day U'll laught thinking what a stupid think 2 do, asking u 2 remix and paying big bigs 2 totally fuc* up some cheesy track ...

:P

i think Ade went on Radio 1 for the rite reasons. he's a rising star in the techno scene and simply wants to further his career... and how proud would u b to b able to say that youve mixed live on radio 1? he admitted to me that Fergie doesnt know @#%$ about techno, but Ade also said that he's actually a nice bloke and fair play if he is getting people like Ade, Ben and Jamie, Sims etc on the show, cos it means that we get to hear them!

i spoke to Ade about the slagging he got on the tribal board, he was laughing his head off and just told me to tell the perpetrators that they were quite simply c.u.n.t.s

The previous comment was towards krakpot.

As for Mills, I think he was a great DJ. At his peak he was hands down one of the best at what he did. No one could match him and people only wanted to be like him. However, times have changed. 909's are almost absolete and have been used and abused in every way. 3 tables is no longer a big accomplishment when dj's are now doing 4-6. That's not to say that what Mills did should be taken in vain. We should respect our forefathers because they broke the barriers. We are where we are at because of them. If people didn't want to hear him, then he wouldn't still be djing.

Here's his upcoming schedule. Enjoy.

dude it was 95 but i havent heard jeff play well since then either, i got loads of his sets here on my harddrive when i used to run a livesets server. Juan Atkins is the same deal to me.
I have nothing against what either has done for techno, they get all my respect for helping in the great evolution of this form of music.
BUT for me as a dj its insulting to see a guy who has been playing for countless numbers of years and cant even mix a couple of disks....... COME ON!!!!!!!!
I dont know thats just how i feel.........
