haha, i usually catch fergie on the way home from work on the radio and ill admit he plays some alright stuff now and then, but thats all hes doing playin some ok techno on the radio, hes not pushing the genre forward, not even a part of the underground techno movement.

and i suspect hell move away from techno in the future when he comes across something else.

but perhaps him playing techno (albeit a lot of the time hes playing the more comercial clubby techno) will allow people out there who dont normally come across it access to the sound. i had found the sound a good few years ago through the voodoo techno hours on crash.fm, i mean his whole approach to it is blatently comercial, with the phrases HAPPY DAYS! spouting up every 2 mins. but i have heard some decent music being played which cant be a bad thing and if it opens peoples eyes (or ears if u will) to the techno sound perhaps they will go out and search for the music as i did once.....

i mean i might be wrong
perhaps hes spawning a whole generation of "happy days!!" saying "techno enthusiasts" all claming to be die hard techno lovers in the midst of a "underground fergie movement" :P

the way i see it is thers allways going to be a commercial crust, but thankfully its one we can mostly ignore.

Lets inspect the mainstream pattern, house> commercial trance > house >commercial house > hard house > commercial trance again > (repeat for 4 years)

here today gone tommorow :)

were as the underground is generating quality music for people who appreciate it.

ohh man that's not nice... this is the club forum... Umek does clubby techno.. and at that angle he's an absolute master...

Camon guys just because he likes it litlle lighter and clubbier now doesn't mean he's no good!!

HAve u heard stuff like his early Absense and expire label... fuc*** hell  ... also lots of the early primate stuff he did...

Even some of the clubbyer tracks r really good funky work outs...

This guys is tallented in many different sub-styles.. that's somethin very rare... he totally has and identity/ sound of his own... in my books that deserves lots of respect!

my 2 cents...

I would say Umek has got talent, he just doesn`t use it wisely...rather than putting out a few good records a year, he puts out slightly average ones every week or 2.

I am not into his sound at all, i`m just going on his production skills.

DJZeMig_L
31-07-2003, 10:48 AM
right right ... sorry! :)

Still techfunk02 I would say that Umek is a track machine... he can't help it he's just like that, doesn't matter how many tracks u do 'cause like any producer he has good tracks and bad tracks, it's inevitable ... especially because he's not just grabbing a formula and changing a few bits.. he has created his formula and keeps reinventing... he can dig up synth sounds that r just  ... honestly just listen 2 his non-loopy stuff... even the more transy sounding stuff is good if u like progressive/ techno transe (I have a few friends that r tech/ progressive transe djs and they all rate highly his produtions)... I would love 2 b able 2 b good at everything/ style I do!! ;) sure I won't like some of his stuff particularly the 1s following these avenues but still bloody he**.

Also he's not affraid of crossing styles/ bounderies ... even if I don't like the results, in my book that's good 'cause that keeps bringing fresh elements, new views, new ways, ... He could easily stick 2 a formula a keep doing the same... but he's not affraid of doing what ever he feels like...

Some of his older stuff is hard as nails but I hate the Recycled Loop sound ( sorry I always seem to moan about shit , I am just being honest , not disrespectful!!).

As for his dj skills , he is a brillaint mixer , whether you like what he plays or not.

As for the bloke himself. My brother met him outside a hotel in Edinburgh and happened to ask him if he knew what the England V Slovenia score was. When the boy answered my brother clocked who it was and asked him up to the house for a shot on the decks. He went along and even showed my brother a few of his wee tricks on the Allen & Heath. So to me he is a decent down to earth bloke.

He does spend a lot of time away from Slovenia too because he get's mobbed all the time. If he was an arse or a "Superstar" style dj he would just stay and milk it for all it was worth.

Just my tuppence worth.

Yeah he has got turntable skills, but it isn`t always how tight your mixing is or what skills you can do, what you play is more important, imo.

I suppose your right in a way , but would you listen to someone who has all the best tracks but the mixing sounds like a fat bastard falling down the stairs.

I prefer to hear good tunes myself , that's why I wouldn't go and see Umek at the moment , but his skills are unquestionable

I think a mix of both would be ideal.

I must be far too over critical of my own mixing. Everyone seems to not mind mistakes as long as the tunes are good and there aren't too many mistakes. If I even hear an off beat in my mixing I feel the need to inflict some pain on myself , like grabbing a handfull of pubes and tugging very hard.

I think I need to chill more and let myself fall down the stairs occasionaly.

Obviously I like to see dj`s with good skills, but if I am in a club I mainly just want good music and I don`t mind the odd mistake.

well i still enjoy listening to m-zone! (private joke for those who a familiar with hard trance, only joking mate)

i think what you play & how it is programmed is far more important than technical ability, a lot of mainstream djs can mix rather tightly, but they play a load of shit, does that make them great djs?

and beyond that passion/love, understanding, and respect for the music you play outshines anything mentioned previously....or maybe im just a jealous bastard who cant mix!!!

yeah, jim fish is spot on there.

you simply dont know. you can't jump to any conclusions.

all i know is i wish someone else was representing techno on radio 1. someone who could present our music is the way it should be presented.

but i suppose if it's a choice between no techno on radio 1 and some techno played by fergie, i think i'd choose techno by fergie. techno definitely needs more exposure...

Quality Patrick , well picked up on :) . I like Irish People(folk) and I also like Irish Music if I am in the presence of Irish People, it's all about the atmosphere.

I don't listen to Radio One ,so Fergie doesn't annoy me in the slightest.

Has anyone ever met or spoke to the boy or do they just hate him because he is on the Radio and has changed genre's so often. Or because , he is making money and doesn't have as much talent as those that aren't making any. Cause that's not his fault, surely that's Radio One's fault for NEVER recognising any talent (Dance Music DJ Wise ). Pete Tong can't mix , Judge Jules can't mix I could go but you get the drift.

No they ****in' didn't. It's the same with every ****ing creative industry, a few people with talent started things off and their business savvy mates (ie tong and oakenflap) were there to hoover up the adulation and credit...

These people are talentless toss pots, and the fact that Fergie is a second generation talentess toss pot is no more reason to respect or even give him the time of day...

Oh but he's bring new blood into the scene people say... well that's just indicative of our scene - we should be bring new blood in ourselves, instead of sat here quibbling over the minutae of sub-genres and uvver such bollox...

U R absolutly right but I think most of us r a bit "2 underground" 2 have the means or need 2 reach a larger crowd... I mean this in individual terms.. obviously as a comunity we all want more respect, credibility, attention, larger audience...

shall we remember this quote next time you criticize a specific artist or a track?

criticising a track is infinitly different to criticising somones life and drawing poorly educated conclusions about the decisions they make.

aye boy's lets just ****ing drop it cause it's causing too much bother really , although I am more than happy to stoke the fire and stand back and watch (only kidding).

Last thing from me. Jim Fish meant that it was wrong to say that the boy himself is a complete cunt and for us to make assumptions about him just because we don't dig what he is doing. That was in relation to what someone else had said. There is nothing wrong with slating his music , mixing or style of radio show. If you put yourself out there you have to expect criticism as much as praise.
