Hmmm.. I've always suspected it but now I know for sure.

When I extract audio from a CD on Soundforge, the volume level is too high. The track is clipping left right and centre. You cant' set the level at which it's extracted either. Well at least I don't think you can.

Does anyone else notice this?

And is there a better prog out there for extracting audio? I can't think of any.

I use soundforge and it is fine for audio ripping
you could try dBpowerAMP
it`s free and very good for all your encoding and ripping

It may sound silly.. but I just use iTunes.. make sure to set your mode to aiff or wav for imports, otherwise it defaults to aac.

Start -> run then type in "sndvol32". Lower the level on the wave input to an appropriate level then rip in soundforge.

?Yeuch itunes is full of all this crap that sits in your memory running all the time, it`s horribly intrusive software, don`t do it.

avoid itunes like the plague, its horrible software, certainly for any specialised decoding etc, i used it once and never again

Wavelab all the way for me, and dbpower amp too its a beauty

i use acid. rips at a low volume but thats easy to sort and then you have the beatmapper (which pisses all over the ableton warp function IMO)

Abletons warp feature aint the most "transparent" thing to use thats for sure.

As for those of you who dont like using itunes for ripping... whats the evidence that it doesnt rip to wav or aiff well?

(im being serious - i use i occasionally and if what you say is true i wont use it at all...)

no serious now, that start --> run tip is really useful.

re: itunes. i always thought it was the mp3 encoding that was shitty on itunes. i havent really seen any evidence that wav encoding is too. mind you, it does stand to reason that if they couldnt be arsed sorting mp3's out, they probably couldnt be arsed with wavs. i think i wil stick to soundforge now though, just in case.

cheers everyone. ps that db thing was quite cool too.
