This is great, I know people will hate on it for sure.
But of course do you realize what this does for techno as a whole!
I'm quite excited about this and thats awesome for Richie.

if someone's gotta do it, i'd rather it be richie than tiesto...

Wicked that he is doing it.
But what will it do for techno as a whole?
Well, I doubt it is gonna be techno as most think of it ie banging dancefloor stuff.
It`ll be more orchestrated I expect.
And techno isn`t a music for the masses. It`s too abstract and has little reference points for the average joe (ie the human voice singing stuff they can relate to).

Certainly better than tiesto anyway.

i thought he's just co-producing the music for one of the performance art/dance number for the opening ceremonies and not playing "live" as teisto did.

Honestly, it won't do a damn thing for techno but it's better than Tiesto. The Olympics is nothing but a damn hack these days anyway. Still, congrats to Rich Hawtin

no, it's not a forgone conclusion techno media blitz. but for those that pay attention to the artist name when they come across it, who don't already know it, and who are curious about it enough so they go find out more -- it could do exactly what SummerOfSam said.

imo, it will just add the the hype machine that is the hair product called richie hawtin. it means nothing more but more marketing and less delivery of the goods. consumers get ripped off in the end again. i miss my old richie circa '94. i demand less ipods, beta testings and sponsorships and more quality music/effort.

i tend to agree. i really hope he does something impressive, but lately i've found him to be more talk than action (which is a huge let down).

this will benefit Hawtin more than anyone else obviously, certainly financially. It's not recognition of techno at all, its just a case of an artist being too big to ignore. It'l be funny seeing Richie opening the olympics certainly. but i wouldnt suddenly expect to see techno sales start soaring

practically everyone at the olympics will not have a single clue who the guy with the dodgy hairdo is playing music for them

I'm sure it will be the overall performance and piece of the century. A rich tapestry of magic that will be remembered for a period of time shorter than the hype that built up to it.

Good for him, seriously. Must be fun as hell to be able to do something like that. As for respect/sales for techno one way or the other? Don't see it doing a damn thing. Did trance get even more popular and respected after Tiesto's DJ set? Seriously, I dunno if it did. Anyone? Bueler?

He'll probably fail the drugs test and get kicked out of the Olympics....

To be honest, I doubt it'll be very techno (4/4), probably much more abstract. But then all the Plastikman albums had a couple of atmospheric, weird tracks on them just to shake things up. Like someone else said: I'm sure he'll stick to his guns and produce something in character, rather than just give them what they want to hear.

Hope he puts the mp3 up on the m-nus site tho!!

so when the french government commissioned him to do some music for their millenium celebration, you saw that as a hype machine for Richie Hawtin Techno Product? come on.

regardless of whether you (i.e. anyone) likes what he does, one can safely say that he's gotten to where he is by doing things his way. i doubt he filled out some application for Olympics Music Wanted... they came to him. you'd turn it down?

what it has to do with techno will probably be almost nothing. if some curious folks come across his name and find the world of music behind the Techno curtain, fair play to him.

besides, at least it's not sashavanoakenweed. or phil c.

nah mate, you missed my point. yes, he does have tallent, and yes he's done things his way. and good on him for trying to get all that he can, and france is great for trying to be on the "edge" of music by doing this, but people won't be talking about how good the he helped write that track for the olympics, just that he did. and that's all we're going to hear about for the next while, which to me is a load of bs. he's much like the 50cent of techno. "have you heard him rap." "no, but he was shot in the face 9 times."
"have you heard him play." "no, but he beta tested ableton." etc etc etc.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind hearing something grittier from Hawtin alright. I heard him play a few months ago and his set was ending with old classics like "Circus Bells" and "Energy Flash", and that was as intense as it really got. I guess he might not be hearing much tougher stuff that he likes recently, doesn't seem like he'd be too bothered either way though.

Ah c'mon, that's silly, of course he has.

Why the constant Rob Hood comparisons here too? People seem to take the 'minimal' tag too literally sometimes I think. What Hawtin and Hood have done have been entirely different.

I wish richie all the best! this is amazing for him! For a kid who was just making good music in the beginning, he's marketed himself so brilliantly that now, he's opening at the olympics.

For techno? Yeah EXCELLENT! If some more ppl enquire about our sound then GREAT!!!

I really can't understand the haters. 'Damn, he's got a brain annd is into commericalism so **** him'. Bah.. give him the respect he deserves.

Really, what the hell is taking this sound to millions gonna do for techno? For years i used to think it would destroy it. but now, i realise techno, no matter what, is wayyyyy too forward thinking to ever let commercialism destroy it. THIS IS THE BEAUTY OF TECHNO!!! it's an ethos of moving forward - NOT a complete sound.

How brilliant would it be if all people all over the world understoood this???????

I really am thinking we need to move forward. Techno has been an old boys club for too long.

Ahhh I'm talking out loud here. Just my thoughts anyway. :)

If he led the likes of Gez Farley (G-Man) into making minimal techno then so be it, he did well ;)

Well, I dunno if you can really compare many of Hawtin's big tracks even, to any of Hood's. I mean what about "Spastik", that in a sense is 'hard minimal techno', but nothing like Rob Hood? That was a totally unique track.

Conan
24-01-2006, 12:07 AM
richie aint made something diferent since he stole the sound of rob hood and whitewashed it.

I have never ever thought of or heard any similarities between hood or hawtin. Hood is far more direct and intense than hawtin is and you could say that about any of the earlier minimal stuff. Hawtin has done his thing from the start, I've never liked any of it but thats not the point.

I think whatever people think of hawtin should be put aside in this instance. This is a great achievement for him and would have been unheard of a couple of years ago, maybe its a sign that things are changing a little.

haha hilarious, comparing Hood to Hawtin. It's pointless, both a minimal ethos sure but 2 totally different approaches to the "minimal" sound. I think people take the word minimal too literaly, very strange.

Jay Pace
24-01-2006, 02:58 PM
People also insist that minimal must only have one true meaning.

One camp will argue that all new minimal is a feeble take on Hood's analogue mastery of the sound.
Others will argue Hood and co. were dull, and pokerflat rules OK.

Both have an equally valid claim to be described as minimal. People get very upset about the pigeonholing going on.
Dummies have been spat out left right and centre over at littledetroit on the subject of classification.

All a bit pointless really.

in 93 richie was the head of the detroit clone pack, working with uk artists COMPLETELY ripping off the sound of detroit. anybody who doesnt know that is uneducated about the history of this music. ricky villalobos admits freely that "we have rob hood to thank for all of this" but richie wouldnt even admit that the sky is blue if it affected his "innovator"status. thats why ppl hate on richie.... the guy was making records in windsor, with detroit production style and a bit of corny sheffield bleep and etching "DETROIT TECHNO" on his records. another case of a ghetto music form being whitewashed and mass produced until it is unrecognizable and homogynous.

now the whole world gets to see the boring, sad state of techno at the olypics, courtesy of an overpaid, overhyped, arrogant prick who hapened to be in the right place at the right time. richie has about as much to do with techno at this point a john digweed has to do with astral physics, F UCK ALL.

hey conan i aint acting superior, i am speaking from experience, BIG DEFERENCE THERE "CHIEF" and i am not saying that everybody after the fantastic 4 is ripping em off, folks take things and make em their own, that is part of music, but if you cant see that from "sheet one" all the way to the new shit, this dude is whitewashing and mass producing lazy compositions under the guise of minimalism then you too are part of the zombie nation

I told you I dont like hawtin's music nor do I buy any of the minimal stuff out at the moment, but i dont think he copied it of hood like you said. Keep on the point.

He's achieved something good for him thats it. Thats all I'm saying.

You dont even know what I listen to or what I like so how can I be apart of the "zombie nation" you refer to. You're making some outlandish assumptions there without any info.

in 93 richie was the head of the detroit clone pack, working with uk artists COMPLETELY ripping off the sound of detroit. anybody who doesnt know that is uneducated about the history of this music. ricky villalobos admits freely that "we have rob hood to thank for all of this" but richie wouldnt even admit that the sky is blue if it affected his "innovator"status. thats why ppl hate on richie.... the guy was making records in windsor, with detroit production style and a bit of corny sheffield bleep and etching "DETROIT TECHNO" on his records. another case of a ghetto music form being whitewashed and mass produced until it is unrecognizable and homogynous.

Hawtin doing this is a good thing, but mainly for him, not for techno. I'm glad to hear he's doing it but I don't think it's some huge opportunity for techno. Many people I see who have wholeheartedly supported (minimal) techno for the last 5 minutes are happy with what they're hearing now, a lot of 'em won't care about the rest of it, or who started it and developed it. This will apply to most of those that might hear Hawtin's Olympics piece and be interested. They'll just go to the Minus website, and make sure they catch him play sometime, or buy a Minus 12".

Hawtin is spearheading something now which is cool for that scene, and it will undoubtedly lead to some good things (Music, events, technology advancements) along the way. But a bit of focus here, Hawtin and the minimal thing are about the only part of techno which is being allowed flourish or prosper right now, while a lot of the rest of it is struggling to survive.

There's a clear division here, and while I still like what Hawtin is about to a certain degree, there's a whole other side... the grittier, off the hook stuff that most of us love, that is not being given a look in or being acknowledged by most of the media. Granted some good records need to come out to change perceptions, the minimal stuff is having too much of a good thing these days. It's hard times, but we need some fair play here, which extends to journalists covering 'good' techno right down to the guy who'll **** what the magazine says and make up his own mind. I guess this is an old arguement, although to see so many labels and producers drop out over the last year or two has been been shit. I mean Hawtin makes some good albums, but Inigo Kennedy makes killer tracks, and what chance is there of him getting out records on a regular basis anytime soon?

Anyway, my point is, not quite that this is war or anything (!) but that there's a big difference between the techno scene/market (as most of us refer to it as) and the minimal techno scene/market. Less hype with Hawtin would be no bad thing at all, with more Single of the months in magazines from Sugeon or whoever, rather than some Poker Flat two tracker :)

Less clubnights being too safe and fashionable wouldn't be a bad thing either. It comes back to what many people love about techno, and that is that it's primal. Is minimal techno or what the whole Minus crew is coming up with in any way off the edge? No, it's warm up/non peak time techno.

christ almighty brian, you sound like eddie fowlkes.

you speak from experience eh? were you IN detroit back then? i was. i started going out in detroit in 1987. from the music institute on, when on most nights i was one of a small handful of white kids there. so unless you lived there too, everything you are reciting as fact is actually hearsay. and that's not how it happened.

it wasn't "detroit techno" on those early records. it was "the new sound of detroit techno". and back then we WERE kids. rich spent all his time in detroit; it was five minutes from his house. there's 40 billion interviews out there where he's very clear where his influences came from. plus 8 was originally formed for the single purpose of creating a derrick may megamix.

maybe rich doesn't speak as freely about certain artists from back then b/c of all the ridiculous racist (yes, racist) crap he and john were given at the start. but it was only from a few. most of those guys are now all friends.

anyway.. you don't like what he does, that's clear. totally your perogative; that's cool. but a lot of what you're saying is just inflamatory. that does no one any good.

Hehe. I'm not going to pretend to really care for anything Hawtin has done, or the Detroit sound at all really. However, I always find it funny when people try and bring up some dig on how he somehow fronted when it came to Detroit. There was a river that separated Portland, Oregon right in the center of the city. It would be quite comical pretending that people on the other side of the river were alien to a sound associated with another side, right? Or, hell, what if a bunch of Hungarians started getting pissed if artists did something represented as the sound of Budapest since, technically, based on what side of theDanube they live, they are either from Buda or Pest? Silliness. The only thing separating Windsor from Detroit is a small water channel and a human made imaginary line.

...once we went to a plus8 party in toronto (fall 96) with richie and speedy j. the place was absolutely trashed by the end. we all sat down, only to discover later that the floor, and now us by extension, was completely covered in puke. so we passed the border, in, as you put it, a "not very well state," and stinking of vomit and the general, unmistakable rave smell.

it was amazing. i buzzed my titties off when i heard substance abuse. it would have been the same commentary for you guys in the uk but here in canada they were like 'the music is by canadian dj richie hawtin, techno dj, who splits his time between making techno in his studio and djing.' really **** cool. not only that, they interviewed him afterwards and he was bigging up detroit and the roots of the music. this is just amazing imho. especially the act to - all about futurism. loved it!

i like the fact that they chose an appropriately futurist, albeit OLD track to play...

i've had a few problems going in to canada (vehicle searches by friendly mounties), but the us side was always a comlete joke...sometimes they wouldn't even look at us...or our drivers' licenses...

I live in Vermont, USA and cross into Canada at least once a month to go to Montreal, which is only about 1 hour from our border, and IMO it's not any harder to cross to/from Canada then before 9/11. Maybe it's because they see in their system that I go up there regularly, but even then I figured that they would think I was smuggling drugs or illegal aliens!! Most of the time they don't even ask for an I.D. or drivers license, but it depends on the time of day you cross, who you get for an agent, etc. They really start asking a million questions and get the drug dogs out as soon as they find out I'm a DJ or they find a crate of records in the car. That's when I plan on being there for a while. Overall though, it's worth dealing with the border because Montreal's techno scene is bar none in North America and in Vermont, techno is like a dirty word.

So...Go Richie!! Not a fan, but seeing him doing his thing for the world to see can only be a good thing.

I agree with TheRev's statement 110%! I'm SO glad that I live so close to Canada. Most of the U.S. is redneck hypocrites that take what the mainstream media feeds them without actually thinking about what they are hearing/seeing. Sad, so sad. I love America the country, but unfortunately the majority of the people that live here fall into the above category.

Just watched the videos and am well impressed. I thought he'd go for an ambient, beatless piece, to play it a bit safer. He always did ambient work as well, so it would still be in his style, but maybe a bit more what the organisers wanted from him. Nope, banging acid techno! Yeah!!!

God, what a thread. I've been off work today puking my guts up for some reason, but in between I've been wasting time by doing things like reading this thread all the way through.

I read the first few comments when it was started, and after that decided to stay out of it because I knew I would get wound up by the inevitable haters. But **** me, deafmosaic really went for it!

Anyway, sorry buddy, but what a tool you are, and I think Hawtin has pissed all over your chips from a great height.

Fair play to Hawtin, that was absolutely wicked, I couldent have hoped for anything better in terms of his music, although the dancing stuff was pretty lame considering the tunes. Maybe he'll get a gig at the world cup now - that would be pretty funny.

And as for those tunes uploaded by deafmosaic on page 6, that I guess were intended to be superior to Hawtins productions or something - I'm gonna be as construtive as possible here - well, they all pretty much sounded the same, the production quality sounded shocking, but maybe that was just down to low quality mp3 or something, but yeah not a single one of them really seemed to do much if you ask me. And what the hell was the plan with the vocals? Is that supposed to sound good? Smurfs summed it up perfectly, or maybe Alvin & The Chipmunks strung out on smack in their later days.

Sorry to be so negative on here, but when someone acts like such a twat, calling everyone on the board kids and zombies and being so ridiculous as to act like he's doing a favour to us all by enlightening us with his bullshit, then I am always gonna have to say something. Especially if they are bigging themselves up like they are some sort of maestro, which is clearly not the case.

Well, thats what I wanted to say. That and lets start the petition for the 2012 games now, who should we have, Ben Sims maybe, or Surgeon would be good. And sorry again for the bitching...

I think I just about understood that. I dont know entirely what "cute toy n*ggas" are, but I guess getting the back of your strap is like getting whipped with something...

francisco: i don't think deaf is threatening you with bodily harm, and "back of my strap" is likely metaphorical. i believe he means that his new record will show up "you haters," in the sense of a diss record in hip-hop showing up the target of said diss. "cute toy n*ggas" likely indicates that he thinks you, steve, and of course mr. hawtin, are not genuine "n*ggas" like he is.
