In the world of electronica, there are few artists who can attract the sort of attention that is usually reserved for the likes of Aphex Twin + Squarepusher, one artist who can though, is Venetian Snares.
Venetian Snares is the performing name of Aaron Funk, an electronic music producer and performer from Winnipeg, Manitoba in Canada. He is known for making experimental IDM, breakcore and glitchcore in non-4/4 time signatures (mostly in 7/4) and for his prolific recordings, having released records on the History of the Future, Isolate/DySLeXiC ResPonSe, Addict, Zod, Distort, Sublight, Low-Res, Planet Mu and Hymen record labels. Musical influences include funk, free jazz, metal, gabba and symphonies.
Mike Paradinas, label boss at Planet-Mu, and still currently the only artist to have ever collaborated with Aphex Twin (On 1995's 'Expert Knob Twiddlers' on Rephlex Records) explains how he discovered Venetian Snares -
''I discovered this ep called "Greg Hates Car Culture" as I was leafing thru vinyl downstairs in Minneapolis record store "Let It be". It was by the intruigingly named Venetian Snares. I had already come across ''Venetian Snares" on a web search for something or other and remembered it for being such a great name. This prompted me to take the disc over to the in-store decks. I placed the needle on the record &... it was ****ing awesome. So I emailed the address on the record and the rest is history. Aaron Funk is one of the most talented people making music at the moment, I just have to get all the tracks he makes. It's an obssession. Just trust me and buy all the cd's he releases, 'cos his shit is hardcore, taking what was drum'n'bass & breakcore totally to another level. Believe.''
Venetian Snares has recieved bags of support from Radio 1, where he was championed by the late great John Peel for years. Last year as part of Radio 1's John Peel Day celebrations he played the special memorial gig at The Quenn Elizabeth Hall alongside New Order, The Fall, The Super Furry Animals + Laura Cantrell, the ONLY electronic dance music act asked to do so.

Jonathan Valentine (a.k.a. Chevron), hailing from Blackpool in the north of England, is of a rare breed who can combine some of the most diverse and challenging range of sounds to date and actually pull it off. 24-year old Chevron's seminal live performances over the past years, releases on Mike Paradinas' Planet Mu label and tracks on many compilations and samplers have successively raised his profile in the electronic music scene. Chevron's long awaited debut album "Everything's Exactly The Same" formed a landmark release for 2005 and stirred up attention from dozens of internet communities, web sites and print magazines.
Described as "Stunning. Music this original and this inspiring deserves to be heard and not just imagined. 4/5" - iDJ February 2005, the album received rave reviews throughout. Getting the album just right has been critical both to Chevron and Planet-Mu, who postponed its release by a year.
Chevrons style is notoriously difficult to pin-down to a specific genre, featuring an unlikely fusion of melodic breakcore, poppy 2-step and cartoon jungle with flavours from all around including dancehall, gabba, jungle, rave, grime, drum n bass, ska, glitch (the list goes on). Artists influential to his work include Prodigy, Orbital and Venetian Snares, but critics have likened his work to "a middle ground between Plaid, DJ Rupture's reconstructed ragga and the mystical techno of the Red Planet label".
Acid house, techno and hardcore rave from the early 90s certainly played an important part in Chevron's development over the years, which was accelerated by access to an old samplers and keyboards whilst based in Blackpool. He has since changed location to Brighton where he resides with Planet Mu co-conspirators Shitmat and Exile.
He makes his Jasbof debut at last after missing our 4th Birthday due to unforseen circumstances, a performance that you realy dont want to miss!
Please be advised to be early, we expect the interest in this to be off the scale, and the venue only holds 185 people, and we wouldnt want you to be dissapointed, you've been warned!
