After a few words of advice...when I'm making up drum patterns by using step write mode on the 909, i find i can make a funky / decent pattern, but often if i shut my eyes and count to it, the 1 of my count doesn't occur on the 1 of the sequencer.
i'm stuggling a bit to understand where to place hits in the bar to make the rhythm line up properly - am i right in thinking that rhythms should have the emphasis end at the end of the bar?
it's hard to put this into words, but if anyone knows what i'm going on about then any advice would be great...ta

use your sequencer. as far as i know the 909 can only go to 16ths? (correct me if im wrong) and you need to be able to utilise right down to 64ths for funky programming. also adding swing within your sequencer will shift notes slightly away from the rigid 16th structure.
hope this helps a little.

It sounds to me like you are placing your groove emphasis in a place where your 1st kick no longer feels like the start of the bar.
It`s a nice trick to play sometimes to throw people off.
If it`s a good beat, just shift the whole pattern until the 1st beat is emphasised again.
