I dont consider myself to be into trance music anymore, almost all of whats about today doesnt interest me one bit.
But i still find myself listening to a lot of old trance music from when it was warm and flowing and had feeling coming from it, charectoristics which are lost these days.
I remember when hard trance meant music that had energy to it but still a lot of depth, that kinda sound slowly dissapeared to make way for more aggresive sounds with less musical ideas and instead lazy arrangements and samey instrument sounds.
Which brings me to my point, is there a place for the old kind of trance anymore, if it was to come back would it be apprectared by the ever increasing amount of people who are happy with a banging kick drum distorted bass and predictable sounding paint by numbers esq riffs ?
ive been making music at home for a few years now and recently i have found myself reaching a point were i feel comfortable with my ability and am able to sit down and write a track and be happy with the outcome, but the only thing is i dont want to make the kinda music that is the norm these days, its the old vibe that grabbed me originally and imo some of the best melodic dance music came from the 90's.
what is people opinions, im out of touch with the modern scene myself but do a lot of old skool sets still get played ? are they appreciated by the newer generation? do you think theres a place for deeper hard trance to return?
god knows the scene must be ready for a change soon but i cant help wonder if its time to take a few steps back, i still have passion for electronic dance music but its sat firmly in my memories of times gone by.
Id love to have something i could be as passionate as i used to be again!

plenty of places in Yorkshire still playing old skool hard trance sets....
mainly in south yorkshire where all the chavs go, but it is still being played....
i'll upload a set tonight which was recently recorded at the RIP MC Bombjack night at Hard-Drive....
Dj Quad-X .... It's a very good set full of anthems.
Ps aren't you the guy on Widerstand.org? not been on there in a while, but still blasting breakcore from my car.

im out of touch with the modern scene myself
me too, i mean, i like some of the new(er) stuff and can dance/listen to it in clubs but i aint got a clue about who is producing at the mo what the labels are etc etc blah blah
i would love to see someone producing stuff with that same vibe as before and i feel a lot of other people would as well.

I think there is a place for the older style to make a come back, whether or not the promoters will let it happen, well thats another story,
I enjoy both new and old styles of music,

UNFORTUNATELY TIMES WILL ALWAYS CHANGE. I DO AGREE THAT THE OLD HARD TRANCE SOUNDS ARE STILL THE BEST. IM STILL LOOKING FOR TUNES FROM YEARS AGO. BUT IF IT DOES NOT PROGRESS SOMEWHERE THEN NOTHING WILL HAPPEN. LOOK AT IT LIKE THIS. THE OLD SOUND THAT WE ALL LOVE WAS ONCE NEW AND HAD TO BE STARTED SOMEWHERE. PERSONALLY IM STUCK IN THAT TIME WARP BUT WHY SHOULD A STYLE COME BACK ROUND JUST BECAUSE THE US THE DIE HARDS WONT LET GO!!!!!!

Maybe it just needs to come back around so it can take a new direction this time. Cause i for one feel it took the wrong turning somewhere about 2000-2001.

because there was a lot of variation in the older stuff, i dont just mean bring out a load of tracks that sound like a coupla old producers. i mean when you listen through the trance music from 93-99 you can hear it evolving, early trance was quite basic at first but over time it got more and more interesting there was always new things happening and a really amazing futuristic feel to it.
Thats what i want to come back, the furutistic mentality behind the older music
i agree with asylum, 1999 was the beggining of the end for me personally.
After that it just seemed to completly change and loose its excitement

Yeah i totally agree with you there mate...
I love that old sound and i to do wish some of the new producers would take a little swing towards it. It really pisses me off when they get an old tune and dump that ****in horible bass line over it. I agree they dont seem to be experimenting like the progression through the early trance. As stated by asylum they have taken a wrong turn somewhere. The thing is would we criticise as i have just done if they started to try to revamp the past???? To what extent should they try to change???? what your views guys????

i think just a bit of openmindedness would go a long way right now, just producers willing to break away from whats expected from them.
Itd be nice to hear more musical tracks, by that i mean something with a bit of substance rather then a simple little riff kick and bass line.
Im gonna have to give some examples of the kinda music that did it for me a few years back, time to delive into my cobweb ridden music collection

hmm wasnt keen on any of that...
guess i look for something else in the trance genre.
fast, melodic, acid / hardcore all does it for me.
then again, back in 1996 i was told that german 'hard trance' or 'rave' was european happy hardcore which would explianm why im not into the samples you gave above.
maybe im just a fast bpm freak

Mate hows it going? Long time no speak! Couldn't agree more with you lad! I said the exact same thing to Paul Nisbet!! All this Kick & Bass stuff is just so boring and its not what trance is about!
The older stuff like Mark EG's Brainstorm is unreal!
Speaking of late i still like scot project and Kamui's new sound is pushing the boundaries but the scene has really gone down hill!!!

What frustates me more than anything else is that we are no longer retrained by the simplex nature of the electronic equipment that was used to make all this classic melodic stuff back in the day. Hard trancey Music now should be sounding more melodic, beautiful and varied than ever due to the technology available but its not. It all uninspiring and samey.
It could be that im getting old now though

Quality clips Complex, and i totally agrea on what everyone is saying.Everyone says music moves foward, but what is it moving too? somtimes i cant the diff between 2 if not more tunes unless a mate says, "this is new" which i say "oh"
Ill always be listening to the older sound, the newer sound just has no passion if you will call it that, old tunes sounded like the people enjoyed makeing them, and they were superb, now its seems the case of "i have 10mins, ill make a track... bish bosh bash. Ah new tune".
The amount of people that love the old sound must outstand the people enjoying this new hard trance. Seeing people go off at partys when a old tune comes on just proves my point, seeing arenas ram packed full of people going to listen to people doing a oldskool set proves my point.
As many genres of music, its gets corrupted by the cash, people arnt in it for the sound annymore which is a shame really, cause music is life to alot of people :)
Annyway, My 2 cents :)

wow what brilliant replys !
craig - good to see you on the net again mate, not bumped into each other on here for some time
don_flintoni - this is something i have thought about also, proof that all the music software and plug ins in the world wont instantly make a good producer, the guys responsible for the older trance will of had relativly simple set ups in comparison to whats availible today but behind that equipment were talented people.
Some of the quality of the older tracks is amazing also, especially in the 97-99 time, really impressive mixdowns with warmth and detail to the sounds.
Miksta - Totally agree, a lot of the stuff thats getting made is lazy dance music coming from people who have nothing to say with there music, its not there to express anything its there to sell to the majority. Its made safe and simple because thats what guarantees the money coming in and it also means the producer can knock out another 10 of the same kinda track over the next coupla months.
Not that i have anything against a producer making money, a talented person more then deserves money for there work so they can live and continue to move forward with what there doing, but i honestly couldnt say ive heard a peice of dance music from the hard trance scene that deserves any money for a long time.
A great deal of it is music with no point, its just a slightly different version of a previous record not a new peice of music
