When did you last back up?

Isnt it time you did it?

If you get time today, do it. Go and buy those Blank DVDs, Clear out your harddrives of junk, defrag, repair permissions etc.

Also if you have time...

Have you got the latest drivers?

Housekeeping never goes amiss.

yeah, right!!!!

if you look at it the 'right way' the hooker also provides the crack...

I've just had a HD failure a month ago. AU$800 later and I have most of it back. Thankfully samples and project files are small and so less likely to corrupt.

An NIGHTMARE!.. glad you got your stuff back!

There's a good example of why folks... who knows what gems could be lost if you dont..

quite right...i lost about 18 months of work a few years ago...had a dodgy hard drive and one day it just irreversibly died :(  :crybaby:

Entirely my own fault of course...for being a slack bastard when it came to doing the boring stuff.

These days rarely a fortnight goes by without me digging out me external USB drive and diligently backuping away ;)

I NOW use Datakeeper by Powerquest (the guys that do Partition Magic). It automatically backs stuff up to a second HD on your PC, removable storage device or network. Fantastic software, and worth the small investment. There are others out there too I imagine, but this one does the trick for me quite nicely.

When I went through my files I also found that only about 5 or 6 GB of it really was precious to me, so backing that stuff up to a DVD every month is a snitch once I had my backup sets defined.

Another issue.. SEPARATE DATA FROM PROGRAMS VIA SEPARATE HDs\PARTITIONS!!!! So few people do this and store everything on C:\, then cry bitterly when Windows corrupts itself, they get a virus or they reinstall Windows without backing everything up. It makes allot of sence for many other very practical reasons (like being able to restore ghost images of your OS). Here's how:

oh crap... so have you gone to a data recovery specialist yet? worth it if you haven't got anything backed up. you could try using RTools first (though it's a pretty fullon app)

Good idea Mark

Hopefully it'll make people feel guilty enough to actually back thier stuff up. Christ it'd take me years to get back all my por.. er... "data" LOL

was just thinking hard about this after many years of hell heh...

pc users - partition your drive into programs and data... then back up your progs with norton ghost.... and your data with dvd or cd...

mac users - buy a firewire drive and backup with superduper :)

shit - after years this has possibly happened xxxl for me recently. i hope i can get this hdd to work again. pretty much all my tracks, fragments, fruity loops projects have gone over the ocean. though i think i can get the partitions to work again. man: 100+ gb worth of samplecds alone... damnit. when i only had a 40 gb hdd i had to backup far more recently to clear space. i always new somehow that getting a huge hdd could be a very bad idea... *grumble*

err and btw, dodge for mod! i mean it :)

I don't trust DVDs. Get a dedicated HD for backup.
