First few tracks where abit boring but then he got proper on it, rinsing some of my all time fav old skool ht tracks, First time iv heard d.a.f.y.k live and it sounded so good on a function 1 rig,.
Only the first time iv heard him live(as normally in another room when he is playing)
just confirmd for me why he is the best ht dj ever, they way he can put his sets together is 2nd to none,

Not trying to knock him here because his tune selection is nearly always bang on (when he played ht classics), but imo he is not a patch on EG!! His mixing sometimes is awful and he is no were near as consistant as EG. For these reasons i dont think he can be classed as the best hard trance DJ ever.

to be fair, EG has had plenty of mixing mishaps, so i think it's unfair to talk about mzones mixing as though it is something terrible.
they are both different djs with different styles. to be fair, mzone, mark eg and fergus were the top old skool trancers in the UK and each had their unique style which rocked the crowd.

Well everytime i have heard EG play out or of a mixtape of him playing out live, i have never heard anything other than a couple of beats slip out slightly! M Zone's beats are forever clashing and the structuring and fading of the mixes is poor. Fades will be rushed and tracks in the mix wont be changing every 8/16/32 on the bar.
Everybody makes mistakes live, and when EG does, which is very rare, they are nothing like M Zones.
EG is by far the better mixer, a prime example of this (i know this is a studio mix but it does show the quality) is Brainstorm!!

Sorry i forgot to add i have taken into account the speed of M Zone's mixing which will have an effect on the mix. We all know how fast he cue's his tunes so alot of the time the pitch isnt bang on. But he likes to keep the energy in the crown high, out of 1 bassline into another which is fair play.
But on the quality front and on the whole, imo there is a big difference in EG and M Zone's mixing.

i beg to differ on that because i have heard plenty of mistakes from both.....
bothers me not as they are playing live, keeping the tempo and playing what people want to hear....
your definition of a good mix sounds folly to me....
so many love mzone precisely because he mixes out of a tune as soon as it gets boring.... the crowd are hammered with melodies and cracking acid and don't listen to the rest of the track which is just a standard 4/4 formula.....
i would like you to list me all these 'terrible' mzone sets because i can barely think of any. all my tapes of him are spot on with awesome tune selection/construction. ... some beats are dropped but who cares. it's a lot easier to drop beats with the old skool.
just a point to make - i dont have any mzone/mark eg sets after 1998 (unless they are old skool sets) because i cant stand all that slow 150bpm boring shit that is as soft as a woman. (so if the sets you are going to point to are from the 1998+ era then i can't really say much as i don't listen to that stuff). i just keep the sets that are fast with power melodies or acid

Fair play each to their own innit, you have your opinion and i have mine.
And yes the mixes i have heard/got are 98 plus. Like you, i cant really comment on anything before that. The stuff i am into is the 150bpm.

Dont really know what you mean by this.
some beats are dropped but who cares
I dont mind the odd beat slipping out, it is only natural, but if the beats are everywhere it just sounds plain awful.

Ive been listening to both these djs since 93/94 and EG is a better mixer no doubt.
But i have to say i have heard some absolute shocking mixes from both. Ive heard mark drop more than just a few beats.
Listen to the flying time mix and listen for yourself

to be fair to both....
mark sometimes runs riot and hypes the crowd with his crazy faces and dance routines, thus lacked concentration on the mix... i remember some modern trance fanatics going on about it on ukscene.
i actually saw mzone mixing once without headphones at north. he just cued it when both tracks were audible(when tieum was there the first time) so if he did that a few times then no wonder there were a few mixes out.
if you add a cocktail of alcohol and other things then bad mixes will also occur.
it all comes down to personal preference.... for me i chose fergus as my fave hard trance dj simply because he always played classics. he didnt play new tunes if they were shit, yet both mark and mzone were culprits of playing modern shit that was terrible.
to this day i can't stand that 150bpm commercial shit.
but that's me. always been into the harder / energy filled stuff.
i love fast cut mixes rather than the 32bar gradual mix....

sorry, who gives a shit about mixing if its above average, only muppets think about 'Oh that beat was abit off' when having it whislt ****ed,
phantomdj said it exactly up there, he would play a tune for 10seconds if thats all that tune was good for, No longing it out, its why he is the greatest ht dj ever imo,

that 150bpm crap was commercial.... was played all over crasher and all the other shite places.
gollum, gary d, nostrum, they all sold out and made watered down shit that the masses would swallow.
you pick up any old skool classic and put it next to the later 150bpm tracks and compare the ideas/production/energy... and the 150bpm stuff isn't a patch on old skool classics that were made for the love of the music and not the money.

Nice 1 for this mate. Yeah deffo agree with you, it is the best i have heard from M Zone.
His mixing was spot on in this, really fast, some tunes were only on for about 30 seconds (if that) and he was bringing another in. But what impressed me most was his set-building & Tune selection this complemented his mixing really well. Every mix was dropping perfect, proper high energy mixing, not giving the crowd no pause.
Full marks!!
