View Full Version : mix like dave clarke?

sash

Dave clarke is the one dude who i can't work out how he mixes? as he drops in the new track the old track is totally gone yet everything is still pushing forward. This is easier said than done cuz what i can't work out is what he's doing with the hi's? There's never any loss of energy. He gets rid of the old tracks so well that even when u notice the track drop out it still sounds good.

ive heard a few dj's say how easy it is to mix like that but when i hear their best effort to mix like DC it's never the same. Ive listened to world service a zillion times and it's doing my head in!

if anyone has any idea as to what he's doin with the mixer eq's and fader i'd love to hear it :)

I agree, i've always said that he's on another planet when it comes to mixing...I have never heard anyone else mix techno and not be able to work out how they're doing it

I'm off to see him in Manchester in november, I can't wait :)

sash

it's totally unique yet so simple. Dosen't he just use 2 decks? if he does use 3 i can't imagine him sittin on 3 tracks like beyer or someone. does he even touch the mid's and hi's?

theledge
04-10-2006, 02:19 PM
I think it is just a super tuned ability to match the speeds pretty much instantly. And turntable skills, he can scratch then drop a track in and out instantly without a glitch pretty much every time,

So he does the simple things better than anyone else

Lots and lots of practice I reckon

theledge
04-10-2006, 02:19 PM
That's my best guess anyway

G-BO
04-10-2006, 02:51 PM
the thing is, he dosent really mix most of the time

just good timing and selection is what makes a dave clarke set so unique

his set on shine on saturday was easily the best techno set ive ever heard, better than any hawtin, surgeon, sims sets ive heard easily

its so painful to see him play so much average sets and then pull this monster of a set out of nowhere, absloute legend :toast:

theledge
04-10-2006, 03:00 PM
i've never seen him play...I hope he plays a set even half as good as some of the CDs I have heard and I will go home happy

Jay Pace
04-10-2006, 04:19 PM
Like G-Bo put it, it comes down to good timing and selection.
Heard him mix plenty of tracks just by cutting abruptly from one into another. This would usually sound shit, but he matches his tracks well, picks them instinctively and knows when to cut in and out. Few to none do this.

Very aggressive hip hop style mixing, creates energy and urgency. Very individual. Class.

Buttman
04-10-2006, 05:16 PM
Heard him play double copies of Badger Bite in, hmm I think 1999?
It was a real cock-riser.

All times I heard him after that he sucked hard.
Just delay out the track, make some noob scratch with a new track and then launch it in sync with the old delay.

ditto.the first time i saw him he nailed it,was amazing.

saw him many many times after that and he sucked hairy balls.

the thing is, he dosent really mix most of the time

just good timing

true...being able to cue up a track fast and scratch it in means generally the 2 records dont have to be beat matched... just close enough so the drop into one another.

he's animal at doing that tho

Dustin Zahn
04-10-2006, 07:15 PM
Like the rest said, it's focused mainly on the cut-and-paste method of hip hop mixing. Lighting fast mixes with proper timing and the right amount of funk. It's definitely easier said than done.

Miromiric
04-10-2006, 07:25 PM
i could not make such mixes in million years.

His mixing is raw,in your face and totaly individual with an old skool feel which makes him second to none and proves he hasnt forgot his roots........Wicked!!!

04-10-2006, 08:08 PM
all that coupled with about 15 years djing at the top level behind him. You dont get that amount of confidence just playing in your bedroom or even in small clubs. It's all about the pressure, the bigger the club you play the more you know you gotta pull something out the bag. After years of doing this, it tends to come as second nature.

Easily the best dj still out of the non 3 deckers if you get me, it's pretty hard, and pointless, comparing him to mills or sims, who are equally amazing dj's, just different mixing styles.

I just got some respect back for him.
The stuff at 1.30 kind of blew my mind.
Oh wait, I just saw he used the delay, that explains it lol.

Well I got respect for him for doing what he did with that BMB even though it was very jolly/silly.

what about the world service cd's? dosen't sound like he scratches in anything there or does he? sometimes when i do hear him scratch in a track what i don't also understand is that the volume levels r still fine and he scratches em in with the bass on. as you'd know scratching with the bass on generally see's a dramatic increase in the volume and can easily be heard if u know what i mean. does he ever touch his mids and hi's?

eyeswithoutaface

there's loads of scratchin tracks/dropping them in on world service. This is ultimately like trying to work out the brushstrokes Van Gogh used on "Sunflowers"

yeah, it's alot easier to just really listen and work out whats going on, i'l say it now, what these types of dj's do isnt THAT hard, they are just remarkably good at it, to the point where people want to copy it, which is good and bad. Dont worry about it toooooooooo much, just enjoy it :)

there's a ghetto-tech record that does the star wars theme.

I'd just like to say, I've seen Dave Clarke live once, thought his mixing and tune selection sucked, downloaded God knows how many sets to try and get into his sound and style, and ended up deleting them as soon as I've finished listening bored to tears. I don't see whats so amazing about the bloke TBH. Even DJ'ing he looked like he'd rather have been sat at home. Sorry if I've offened anyone, but there's shed loads of better, more talented and passionate DJ's out there. The only good thing from Clark for me is the Red Series and The Wolf and The Compass. Productions ok, but DJ skills...nah.

why is it when anyone starts a thread about DC it ends up like this?

There's a big difference between the way he mixes live and the way he mixes on his cd's. Yes there's heaps of shit i dont like when he mixes live but when i hear world service 1 techno cd and listen to cross overs like Artefacts 'are you jackin' into that Unknown 'A1' track it blows me away. Simple yet so unique and powerful. Also on the electro cd Alden Tyrells 'krenk box' into Adults 'hand to phone'. Its such an awesome transition and no one does it like DC. When he's on fire he's ON FIRE!

i remember him dropping drexciya's 'the countdown has begun' one nye at orbit at midnight then scratching into something equally as good. he'll always be a legend to me just for that, that and all the dance mania booty trax he used to drop.

download some oldies Si, any essential mix from the 90s, and you'll change your mind.

i can't say i've heard him play this millenium so can't comment on his new sets, he's a big makaton fan so he can't be that bad surely.

Best techno dj on the planet for me, completely different style to everyone else which makes it so good.

I agree he can sometimes have off days but so can anyone else. His sets at Pukkelpop, Voodoo NYE and TITP have easily been my 3 favourite sets of the last year. The guy is a legend.

Courtyard at Bugged Out he was king
Always loved seeing him play the Volks in Brighton - worked best in smaller more charged atmospheres. Suited his style.

Seeing as I like his older productions, I will try checking out some older sets. His new stuff and sets really don't do shit for me. I'll scan for some older sets. Recommend a good Clarke year.

Try the World Service sets, or Dave Clarke Fuse (don't know the year) - that is a quality CD

I also have live @ Automatik Rex Club Paris downloaded from Emule try a search for that, the mixing and cutting is from a different planet....

Some strange comments in here, like him or not he has undeniable djing skills, truely, truely awe inspiring at times. Music aside, the guy has to be one of the best dj's in the world and has been for many years. Totally different style to Sims, pretty much non comparable. Clarke couldnt layer it like Sims on 3 decks, just the same as Sim's couldnt play quite as brutal and effective as Clarke on 3. I say that after seeing both around 40 times over the past couple of years, both are in a league of their own but for totally different styles and reasons.

Ruskin for me is kinda the perfect balance between them, alot more aggression and variation than Sim's, but 100% perfect on 3 decks or more

I defy anyone not to listen to his award winning essential mix (cant remember the date, but peeps know the one) and not be dumbfounded. It is truely, truely stunning

did any one hear the set form i love techno 2002 i think. the most dreadful set i have ever heard.sounds like a person mixing for the first time with a effects pad r sumtin. no solid mixing way to much effects. tunes just startin and the other ones ending.
i seen him 5 times and ever time i ave seen him i was disappointed. i like his records he brings out (sometimes).
maybe he was better before i started listen to techno. but imo he is the most overrated dj on the planet

dude have u heard his world service mixed cd's? They're a lot different than his live sets. The mixing on the world service cd's is world class and cannot be replicated. if so i'd like to hear it.

yes in fact world service is one of the first techno cds i heard that made me like techno. but i honestly think is poor compared to a lot of other djs.for instances eric sneo- palazzo 4 cd or dave the drummers hydrualix sessions i find alot better and thats to name 2.
i think the mixing in world service is boring i like his choice in choons. i love the electro mix on WS1. and still listen to that the odd time.
i listened to WS2 didnt like it at all

fair enough. ok check out this sample, its from world service 1 techno cd. Bailey & Redhead's 'watch out' mixed into Beltrams 'Metro'..

dave clarke crossover sample.mp3

The thing that intrigues me is how does he come from a bangin track like 'watch out' and just slam in a track like 'Metro' without loosing any energy and keep everything moving forward if u know what i mean. A crossover like this shouldn't work as well as it does. How exactly did he do this crossover? That's what i'm trying to find out. As mentioned before in this thread it's that hip hop style of scratchin in a track, but i find this technique extremely hard to do with techno because you can loose your energy so easliy (especially in the hi frequency range). DC (when he wants to) can pull off this technique 99 times out of 100 (when he's not doing his cheesy djm fx tricks). The risk factor of this technique i find so much greater than your standard beat mix.

p.s. i'm at home sick ATM drinking vodka so if this post makes no sense i apologise :)

seeing dave clarke 6 years ago in shine was amazing, never heard music like it b4.....real eye opener, it so good to see...not only techno...but decent jackin/dark techno at the big gigs at festivals & superclubs....whereas most of that caper is shite, it kinda shows that everybody is partial to the bit of dirt from clarke

prob one of most consistently exciting djs out there imo
