View Full Version : Overrated DJs

now this will bring on some negativity just wondered peoples thoughts

there are a few DJs who I think are exceptionally overrated - I wondered what you all thought and care to name names?

I rate a DJ on tune selection more than mixing so the following has bias:

Matt Hardwich managed to bore myself and a wide variety of clubbers at a night in devon making us all stand there wondering "What?!?!?". Anne Savage is one who I think is extremely poor - though she did play some uberdruck stuff when I last saw her. I will also admit i'm not Ben Eye's biggest fan - i've only seen him a few times though and his tune selection did not grab me in the slightest. I do realise not everyone will agree with these comments but am giving my opinion.

Not like you to be negative about anything loukas!!

A dj who mixing is not of a very high standard is uberdruck,he's a great producer but when I saw him at academy last month he was very poor technically.

the only time i get bored is when dj's 'overmix' tracks and loose the energy of them. for under-rated dj's i would go with dolphin or the producer. or m-zone even, when ppl dont know him.

Louk
19-10-2003, 01:30 PM
fair play french og but i find other djs who play similar to ben eye more interesting and i know he has a wide variety of fans just stating my opinion.

i will list djs who i think are underrated in a moment and didnt intend this to be a slagging match just wanted peoples opinions.

pearcey im inclined to agree about uberdruck but thats only because the first time i saw him he played an amazing set and the second and third and forth time was basically that same set again with only 1 or two new tunes.

tune selection is what its all about to me.

tune selection is what its all about to me.

so to you, it doesnt matter if a dj is pulling off mixes that are double beated to f__k, aslong as the tunes float your boat, that makes him a good dj???

Louk
19-10-2003, 02:32 PM
actually, yeah

i'd rather listen to the worlds most incapble dj of beatmatching playing all the best tracks then mr perfect playing tunes that are so shite it defies all belief.

though there are djs that get both tune selection and mixing right and sound amazing :)

I have to agree with Louk, Beneye in my opinion is overrated....

Hakka.
19-10-2003, 05:30 PM
I don't really know Ben Eye that well enough to judge...

Last time I saw him play was at the grove... he played similar stuff to what I play... his mixing was good in places but I think the grove setup was giving him trouble.

He must be pretty good to get where he is, but I've heard a lot of bad things about him though.

you really need to see ben for your self, iv followed him since he first started at the country club, week in week out this bloke smashed the floor to pieces with tunes no one had even had a sniff of, not only that he played weekly 6 till 8 in the morning which is another job on its own.. nowadays i think he has to be one of the most upfront hard t djs there is in the uk playing test presses and cds that in some cases nobody else has, not even the bigger djs . beside that ben and his studio partner log one have been developing there own tunes over the past year, creating there own sound and style which is prooving to be a massive succsess. ben is one of my main residents and is booked on a monthly basis for diversity and trilogy you can allways garantee crowd satisfaction, if any body hasnt heard beneye and is curious then listen to him for your self, up and coming events will be soon listed on the forums cheers tomo

i dont see how anyone can say Ben Eye is overated, his sets at the legendary Country Club used to get everyone back in from there cars outside! guranteed! a good dj, with a wicked taste in tunes no doubt!.

iain cross - i think iain is definitely underrated - this guy is the bollox!
he did a vs with Ben Eye @ the Country Club and kept him right on his toes!

Louk
20-10-2003, 11:51 AM
fair play but i still hold the opinion he is overrated and i've seen him a few times now - to be fair I dont think he lives up to the hype that people were telling me before Ive seen him about how good he was. However I saw a few of the below on the same night and was blown away

Those that I reckon are underrated are Nick The Kid, Richard Wright, Soundfixation, Pearcey, Tim Daborn, Jon The Baptist + Iain Cross(starting to get the recognition they both deserve), Chris Davies, Dr J, Simon Davis and of course Botus Flemming + Hakka

Wragg deserves a mention too.

cheers 'en

PS Major Tom - no worries but I've seen ben so do have an opinion to form - im not saying he's a bad dj as he blatantly wouldnt be where he is if he was bad. However having the most upfront tunes no one has had a sniff of doesn't mean they are the best. I too have received many a promo and test press + CD-R to write about (and also play on the radio) sometimes direct from producers as soon as its done in the studio and that is no lie and fair play they might be the most upfront material but they are not necisarily the best - thats why if someone was to play stuff like "Dumonde - God Music" or even Jay Walker - Equinox in a set now i'd love it far more than a set of the most upfront promos that arent as good if you see what I mean? Do agree the stuff logan is producing is shit hot though happy days.

Louk, Log:one & BenEye produce the EyeTrance stuff, so they are both worthy of a huge BIG UP! Having upfront tunes is NOT the be all and end all agreed, but IMO BenEye can smash a dance floor to pieces with his mixing, weather the tunes are old or new. Underrated IMO still!

I hadn't heard of Ben Eye untill I went to the country club, but I remember the first time I saw him play I was curious to who he was. His choice of tunes and mixing was spot on and to be honest I cant really remember a bad set from him at that club. Ive heard him play at other clubs and not been that impressed by his performance but I suppose every dj goes through a bit of a rough patch and I will always give them another chance to prove themselfs. I really couldn't say he was overated or underated, maybe just a bit hit and miss at the moment? Allthough he dosn't really get many bookings outside of the south west or the uk.
An extremely overated dj imo is m- zone I mean he's been around for years and his mixing is still awfull! You would have thought he'd have got better with years of experience? As for underated dj's ive gotta go with Abyss, Cross and Nick The Kid.

Spooney

BenEye, Meri, Cross & Spinout, Jon the Baptist, Chris Hare, Northern Roy, Aaron Thomas, Steve Hamlett ALL the Country Club residents were / are underrated. That club had the BEST residents ever, and they ALL set the standards for the guest DJ's that played every week. End of story

I think ben eye is a ****InG wIcKeD DJ!! I dont think he is over rated at all!!! he used to rock the place at the country club and made it the place it was!! along with the other C.C resisdents!! in my opinoin he is one of the best hard trance djs out there!! i have been to see him a lot of times in taunton and in bristol but to me he plays his best sets at the grove in seaton!!

I know what you mean si.If you look at the old helter skelter packs there was only ever two trance tapes in an 8 pack most ov the time Mark EG and M-Zone then the rest would be hardcore. Back then he most def had his own style compared to Mark eg they might have played 1 or 2 ov the same tunes. I guess he was in the right place at the right time.

Hahahha Scorpio!

tune selection wasnt good. He had the same tunes in his bag for 4 years!

Fair play to him tho he got paid for it! hahaha..

Over rated.. Alex Kidd from Goodgreef.
Uberdruck...Maybe on technical ability but he pleases the crowd which makes up for it.

Anne Savage is deffo poor. She always hammers the 'Drop-ins' aswell. Every mix dropping beats and the off-beats in the breaks. Sounds alright but she over does it. Mixing is poor aswell especially technically.

Uberdruck: I dont see how they can be poor technically. With them being so good producers, obviously what im saying is they know how to EQ their tunes. They know how to get the best out off the Basslines etc etc so i thought technically they would be very good??

Eddie Halliwell: ive heard alot off good stuff bout him. Personally dont like him, but maybe feel he is Underated??

I just wanna say that myself and the rest of the Religion/GAS UK crew have worked very closely with Tommo and Ben Eye etc from Triology and Club Diversity for the past 12 months.

Although I agree with Louk about the newest tunes not always being the best I personally feel Ben is a very worthy DJ and even though I'm sure you can pick faults with him (as with every other Dj in the UK) he has worked hard enough to get himself into a postion were clubbers and Dj's from all around the country are disscussing his skills. Never go by tape packs mate! Mark EG will tell you that! I used to think Mark was shit from the Helter Skelter, Dreamscape tapes, etc; but in club conditions he's amazing! Don't judge DJ's on tape packs. Have you been on the starge to play the 1st set at Hindsight when theres no one there for the 1st hour? Check out the sound on stage at that time (when Ben has played everytime) and you will see what I mean. You should pop to the Grove or the Showbar and witness BenEye play then.
