both of these reviews seem to be by clubbers rather than die hard techno fans ... it shows in there reviews , also think its quite cool in the way the techno has effected them!

Well what can I say it was mine blowing.

I arrived at the club just before 10 so had to wait outside for a few minutes, which normally can be a pain but as the bouncers where probably the nicest I have ever met it was in fact it was quite pleasurable. I could also hear the music thumping from the almighty soundsystem inside which was getting me all wound up for a wild nights raving.

The club was a good, long in shape with a real raw edge feel without been grotty like some underground venues. The system at the front and my what a system. As I was the first there I assumed like normal I'd have the whole dance floor to myself but I was wrong. Within the first hour the capacity was nearly half full and by 12 o'clock there was nearly 500 people there all for the same reason, the music. The promoters obviously knew what there where doing because the first 3 people I spoke to had travelled a long way, one been from north Wales and the second been from Scotland.

First on the decks were DJs, Jay knight(Locked) and Tiptoe (Darkside), they both had the crowd slowly warming up as they played the more minimal side of techno with electro elements, Jay's style was smooth and progressive and tiptoe shown off his talent well toward the end off the set with some good trickery. Second on where two newbie's to the scene, co promoter and resident was Oriel and D. Jacques (Nuclear Audio) Both played well put together sets with a combination of minimal tribal techno and a few pounders to pick up the pace. Thirdly to take to the decks was techno hero Billy Nasty and the underground scene leader DJ Ribbz. Both very passionate about the scene and this been there first ever B2B set played an amazing selection of the best floor fillers and underground filth which the crowd thoroughly enjoyed taking the night to the next level. Then it was time for legends in there own right Mark EG and Ben Long to do there stuff in the insane 8 deck mix off. I was blown away completely I have never seen anything like it. Both nailed the decks well and truly, playing a variety of techno whist mashing it up over the top of each other with amazing Effects trickery and almighty energy. Both DJs showed complete and utter DJ talent and had the crowd in frenzy. I don't think there was one person in the room sat down the whole crowd boshing away trying to climb over each other to see and get to the front. In the end three bouncers had to stand by the railing to prevent them falling over. It was like clubbing should be with people on podiums, chairs, tables and if I remember rightly I even saw one person trying to climb onto the bar to get a better view. I have only ever watched Mark EG play at hard dance events and was expecting his usual show of crazy jumping around madness. But this was not the case although he did do some loony moves he was completely focused. Ben long's mixing was also flawless and his scratching was amazing with for about 2 minutes he did it with him with his hands behind his back. This set was really something spectacular. Finally to play was also co promoter and resident of not only this night but nuclear Audio, Mucky Beats and the famous orbit resident John Berry. They again Played well B2B and finished the night with a selection of new and old tunes, leaving a full club that was screaming for more and reluctant to leave. As I waited around for my friends I over heard the bouncers saying that they had never seen a night go off as much as that in a long time. I couldn't agree more every one in there was very different yet everyone was there for the same reason techno music. For this was clubbing at its best, the people where really friendly, the promoters welcoming and professional but most of all the music was spot on, structured well out and had everyone dancing right up until the end.

I don't often go to a night that blows my socks off like this one did but I do not lie this was amazing. If I where you id defiantly attend the next one even if techno isn't your cup of tea, like said I am a new comer to the techno scene but Saturday night has most defiantly got me infected with it!
As they say you should try everything once but believe me one night at The Techno Experiment it will leave you wanting more.

Coming to the Zoo Night Club in Manchester, The Techno Experiment promised large things. "The Techno Experiment is a new concept for Manchester’s club scene. This is a musical extravaganza like no other, unravelling the chains created by genre categorisation and re-packaging them as a more forward thinking experience.”

So, erm, lots of techno then? Bringing together a whole host of techno DJs the night was a celebration of all things techno and introduced a grand total of five back to back sets from such names as Mark EG, Billy Nasty and DJ Ribbz.

Formerly The Hangar, The Zoo Night Club pretends to be nothing it isn’t. I believe that the previous name suited the club as it is pretty much just a large room/warehouse style building, found down a small dark street. It lacks any decorations instead merely painting black, the floor is somewhat dirty; I wouldn’t have been surprised if I’d seen a small rat scuttling round or maybe having a dance, who knows.

The lighting consisted of two colours; red and green, long rays of green filled the room most of the time although every so often they would raise the lighting somewhat to reveal the monstrous crowd dancing at the front…amazing. It does have a small seating area, although it was never full. The whole feel of the club created a sense that it was merely a place to enjoy the music…The Techno Experiment couldn’t have picked a better place to host their party. The seating area wasn’t full because everyone there was getting down in front of the railed off, slightly raised DJ area.

One of the leaders of the underground rave scene Ribbz came along with Billy Nasty at the stroke of midnight for a one and a half hour back to back session. The choice to play relatively minimal sounds by Ribbz presented a somewhat boring prospect, Billy Nasty injected a more trancey sound into the mix which allowed it to prosper slightly, though it never really excited the punters as much as it could have. Mark EG joined Ben Long of Space DJZ on a stage presenting a total of eight decks and two mixers, the possibilities were endless for the two UK favourites weren’t they?

Upping the tempo and adding a bit of pound to the endless array of pounding music the two proved a huge crowd pleaser as people mounted the podiums and the small stand in front of the DJs. The atmosphere was somewhat rocketing, ‘Strings of Life’ over the top of some mad pounding track epitomised this moment as the highlight of the evening.

The atmosphere was electric. Holding such an atmosphere for 6 hours of techno is somewhat of an impossible task though, surely?
The night on the whole proved a success, whether avid techno lover or just a techno tourist crowds were pleased, on different levels, throughout. Such success is evident as the organisers have already bought together another night of mayhem, at the same Zoo Club on the 2nd June, who knows what to expect from the sequel.
