Sir Alex Ferguson will be able to call on Rio Ferdinand and John O’Shea for Saturday’s match against Middlesbrough to ease his defensive injury concerns.

Patrice Evra was the latest name added to the list of casualties which includes Ferdinand, O’Shea, Gary Neville, Nemanja Vidic and Mikael Silvestre.

Evra was on the end of a late challenge from Colin Kazim-Richards and had to go off with a calf injury after 21 minutes of the 2-0 win over Sheffield United.

“It was a bad tackle, but we don't know the extent of the injury yet,” Sir Alex told Sky Sports. “He'll have a scan in the morning.”

The good news is that Ferdinand, who has been suffering with a niggling groin problem, and O’Shea, who was out with a calf problem, will both be back at the weekend.

“I'll have Ferdinand and O'Shea back on Saturday,” added the boss. “I could have played John against Sheffield United, but he has been doing some good work in training and he will give us some experience and strength at the back.”

Vidic progressing very well

Nemanja Vidic headlines the better news from the treatment room as United prepare to face Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Although the Serbian international will not be fit for the Boro clash, his manager believes he could be available for the final few fixtures, including the FA Cup final against Chelsea on 19 May.

"Vidic is coming along very, very well, and he starts training on Monday," said Sir Alex at his pre-Boro press conference.

"He's been doing some physical work in the gym but on Monday he'll start some serious work and hopefully that brings him to possibly being available for the latter games.

"Gary Neville is progressing quite well, there's a chance he'll be ready for Everton. We'll make a decision on Ji-sung Park next week. We've seen the specialist and hopefully we can get an opinion on what the next stage should be.

"Louis Saha is continuing his progress with the physios but I don't think he'll be fit for this week."
