Yeah, he's not far wrong, and the less stringent rules in the Premiership make it even easier to play that way, most teams play shit football now and it's getting worse if anything.

I'd rather teams not know the meaning of defending than attacking - make the game much more entertaining - imagine if everyone played like 'pool and Chelski - you'd never get any exciting games - just a succession of scrappy stale mates!

REAL MADRID legend Jorge Valdano has blasted Jose Mourinho and Rafa Benitez — describing their style of football as "s*** hanging from a stick".

The Argentinian World Cup-winner reckons Liverpool and Chelsea's poor Champions League display last week showed the way the game is going.

And Valdano is angry that such talented teams are not showing off their skills.

He said: "Football is made up of subjective feeling, of suggestion and, in that, Anfield is unbeatable.

"Put a s*** hanging from a stick in the middle of this passionate, crazy stadium and there are people who will tell you it's a work of art.

"It's not — it's a s*** hanging from a stick.

"Chelsea and Liverpool are the clearest, most exaggerated example of the way football is going.

"They are very intense, very collective, very tactical, very physical and very direct.

"But a short pass? No. A feint? No. A change of pace? No. A one-two? A nutmeg? A backheel? Don't be ridiculous, there is none of that.

"The extreme control and seriousness with which both teams played the semi-final neutralised any creative licence, any moments of exquisite skill."

Valdano puts the negativity down to Mourinho and Benitez's lack of playing experience.

He added: "The lives of Mourinho and Benitez have crossed in a world that is ever more scrutinised and exposed by the media.

"That is why they look at each other with such distrust.

"But they have two things in common — a previously denied hunger for glory and a desire to have everything under control.

"Both of those things stem from one key factor — neither Mourinho nor Benitez made it as a player.

"That has made them channel all their vanity into coaching.

"Those who did not have the talent to make it as players do not believe in the talent of players.

"They do not believe in the ability to improvise in order to win football matches.

"In short, Benitez and Mourinho are exactly the kind of coaches that Benitez and Mourinho would have needed to have made it as players."

Yeah but it is possible to playing entertaining football and win - 9 league titles in 15 years is proof of that! How many championships have Liverpool won playing the way they are now - seem to remember them playing decent football when they were actually dominating things.

Granted its a good tactical game for European competition but it aint ever gonna win you the Premiership - it leads to too many dropped points in boring stalemate matches, particularly away from home.

And it will never change unless the fans disaprove. Liverpool fans seem more happy to see somebody like Sissoko run around with no abilty nailing players and giving the ball away than to watch somebody like Ronaldo.

Real Madrid supporters won't put up with watching crap football - about 8 years ago they were top of the leagye by 3 points and the manager got sacked because the football was boring and this season the fans hate Capello as his style of play is boring - even if they win the league they want him out.

Dont see how you can compare Sissoko and Ronaldo. The roles in the teams are completely different. One is suppose to break up play and close down the space in the midfield, the other is a winger whos suppose to attack and create opportunities?

Each midfleid needs a player who can break up the play and close down the opposing midfielders.. Which is why Hargreaves has been linked with utd as its something they lack.

Bit of a bizarre comparison there mate.

Liverpools football is much worse when they play Crouch though, I suppose that's kinda true for Chelsea with Drogba as well, they can't play that way with Kalou!

just a case of playing to your strengths.

Both managers been there long enough to build a team in the image they want though - if they wanted their strengths to be playing 'the beautiful game' then they would have bought players in to do that by now.
