how the heck is one able to get started making choons? I have a lot of copied software - cubase/fruityloops/rebirth and loads of drivers from a mate but how can i start. Fruity loops seems the easiest but is it worthwhile getting some help manuals or going on a course to get me used to using it.
any help?

Just do what i did and start with the simple things then move onto other software, you'll probably wanna try reading some stuff online. What do u mean loads of Drivers and stuff, do u mean Plug-ins ?
Try and get hold of some software that lets u program drum beats/loops like this one > http://www.brambos.com its not the best thing in the world but its good to mess about with.
Heres a clue to finding software http://www.imesh.com

Also Zero-G do quite alot of CD's with samples on of all different kinds, u might wanna try getting hold on Total trance or something with House beats on it then use Sound Forge to edit them to what ever you like and maybe use Acid Pro to arrange the loops and samples. Or you could always use Logic or Cubase depends how far you wanna go.

Yeah I agree, just start doing the simple things and every track you do you'll learn that little bit more.
Thats what ive been doing and slowly i'm learning.
I got hold of "Cubasis go 3.0" from PC World for 15 quid the other day. Its just like an easier version of Cubase but the best part is you get a nice big manual explaining everything and it all helps if you are using other versions of cubase, so you dont have to stir at the online ones for hours on end just to find out how to press play etc
