In September 2002 Bleep43 started putting on parties at the infamous subterranean toilet/bar Public Life in Shoreditch. Showcasing local DJ and live talent in house, techno and electro, they also invited the likes of Detroit’s Mike Grant, Portable, Jacen Solo and minimal legend Daniel Bell down to play. After 3 years it was time to move on, and after a handful of parties with the likes of Hieroglyphic Being & Convextion, they have now established themselves at South London’s premier venue for underground electronic music, Corsica Studios. Look forward to a night across 2 rooms
It’s becoming increasingly clear that Tony Childs aka Surgeon carries the creative flame for techno today. Ever since his dramatic debut with the “Surgeon EP” in 1995, Tony has released a number of landmark records that have left their indelible mark on the genre. At the heart of his discography is the experimental “Force & Form” album on Tresor, highlighting the influence of UK electronic pioneers such as Autechre, Throbbing Gristle and Coil have had on him. And furthermore, his decision to switch to digital Djing has had a remarkable effect, with recent sets showing his ability to drop other genres seamlessly. Expect techno, acid house, dubstep, disco and more.
Danny Wolfers aka Legowelt has been creating an idiosyncratic world of sound ever since his debut release on Bunker in 2000. A resident of Den Haag, recording under a myriad of names such as Squadro Blanco, Gladio, Smackos and often alongside the likes of Orgue Electronique and Chicago legend DJ Traxx, Wolfers takes influences from the likes of Blake Baxter, Adonis, Drexciya, Italo-disco, John Carpenter soundtracks and even cinematic legends like Herzog and Lynch in creating his “little worlds” as he calls them. His live sets are actually live as well, recreating the “analogue box jam” aesthetic that the Chicago House pioneers started back in the 80’s.
Our 2nd Dutch guest is Newworldaquarium aka Jochem Peteri. For a number of years now there has been a steady stream of wonderfully unique and abstract house records released by Peteri under such imprints as Delsin, Carl Craig’s Planet E and New Religion. 2004 also saw the emergence of the 154album, a project that Jochem has worked on since 1993. This is only Jochem’s 2nd visit to the UK, and we’re looking forward to his individual slant on house.
Completing the line-up in Room 1is Jonny McIntosh, who has been a regular behind the decks since 2002. Often cited as Scotland’s answer to Larry Heard, Jonny is nothing less than a magnificent House DJ, seamlessly segueing old funk, disco, Chicago House and Detroit Techno with ease. Due to his academic career his appearances behind the decks are as rare as gold dust, and as such we look forward to his set with anticipation.
Room 2 on the evening will be hosted entirely by Bleep43.
Co-founder of Bleep43, Emile Facey aka Plant43 has been playing regularly live since the start, and will be appearing as his 2nd release on lauded label Ai Records hits the shelves. Citing such as influences as Kraftwerk, Chaka Khan, Obituary and HP Lovecraft, Emile’s debut was received warmly, with comparisons such as “sleek techno of the Drexciya and Juan Atkins vintage getting cozy with precision Düsseldorf engineering.”
Jo Johnson helped organise the first Bleep43 party in 2002 and joined the crew later that year. She will be playing a solo live set, inspired by Steve Reich, Alice Coltrane, Kraftwerk and Vaughn Williams - using Ableton Live, a K-station, a Korg EA1 and an ER1.
In the mid 90s, Jo played guitar for Huggy Bear, releasing on labels including Wiiija, Kill Rock Stars, Stereolab’s label - Duophonic, Gravity and Calvin Johnson’s K label.
Jo began writing repetitive, melodic electronic music on a cheap kids Casio keyboard in ’96. Her techno epiphany was in ‘98, seeing the Advent in London. It all came together: industrial, disco, minimalism and an attitude of no stars, and she was smitten. In 1999, Jo began writing with Emile Facey, aka Plant43, for their joint project VLF.
Completing the line-up are residents Ken Odeluga, Dan Bean and Toby Frith.
