is this the same as a compressor. if not, what are they used for?

and any suggestions on some good ones out there.

Yeah, I`ve been looking at getting myself a nice transient shaper.
No it`s not exactly like a compressor as such.
Some of the new shapers offer real extreme and fine control of transients allowing you to drastically change the attack of sounds and so on.
I`m still looking for a decent vst that does this.

digital fishbones do a nice free one.. give you an idea of what its all about

UAD do a VST version of the legendary SPL Transient designer which is really nice not much cop if you don't have the UAD card of course.

There is a good one on Cubase 4 also.
