View Full Version : Is an MC303 more or less the same as a TB303?

I can't afford 1200 quid for a tb303,but the mc is only 50 odd quid on ebay.

I mean, can you still tweak up an acid line on the mc303,and is it as good as the tb?

I want to spend some money!! and if anyone in the south half of the uk wants to sell me a tb303 at a reasonable price......:;

it's nothing like a tb303, in fact it's pretty rubbish imo.

Just get yourself the audiorealism tb303 software synth, or if you really need a hardware emulator, go for a fat freebass

have the audio realism, and rebirth. (just figured out how to map it to my midi after about 6 months of having it) I want a box, with knobs on.

I've got money to burn,I had a 2 grand bonus in my last wage packet,I want to spoil myself. But i don't want to pay 1200 squids for a tb.

We need to get a petition on the go to Roland and get them to relaunch it.

well either get a midi controller so you can control your software with a box with knobs on, or get a fat freebass synth.

I'd personally go with the controller option

I have now seen 4 people individually buy one of these thinking they were going to make squirly acid lines with them

In fact - that's all the people I've ever known own one.....

I wonder how many extra they sold in total, on account of having a famous number after their name

if you're any good at building electronics have a look at the x0x0x - meant to be the closest hardware emulation but theres a waiting list as far as i know.

I think they sold quite a few. They were good for what they did, but yeh the sounds were shite. I think I got mine on the strength that reading reviews, the RM1-x was more complex to use (and more expensive). I stand by them for that, mine taught me the basics of chucking loops together, but I brought other boxes to get sounds from.

In fact, damn them, that's probably why I got so many boxes lol

I used mine as a live sequencer for about 5 years, and it was quite good for doing loop based things live. The fact you can write a pattern and then set up mute variations and pull them back with one button was good.

I will maintain they have one good sound - take the tom sound, play it low so it sounds crusty and almost bit crushed with a crazy arpeggiator pattern, random panning and reverb. That's about it though.

Mine does still come out occasionally if I'm feeling uninspired, 'cos the arpeggiator and groove quantise is quite fun to produce some random synthline pattern. But it does get recorded into the RM1-x or the computer to piss about with.

Ahhh I'm all nostalgic for the crap little thing...

If you want the sound of the 303 without spending loads of cash, this is the plug in you want:-

I've got the Audiorealism bassline plug in, which is good, but apparently this thing is alot better.

check out the audio samples on the site to see if it fits the bill...

What about the future retro revolution?

And Microdot,I've got cash to burn.

the future retro is an ok synth in it's own right, but it's no 303.

At the end of the day, a 303 will never sound like a 303 unless it's a tb303, the software clones have come the closest upto now.

The Phocyon IMO IS the closest... it also pushes the whole 303 concept into a new dimension with all the added functions... I use it with a Bitstream 3x controller and a cant see the point in spending 1200-1800 unless you have that money just laying about.. If you learn over time how to beef it up using the correct vst's or outboard, it is virtually identical... Check it out..

Yup. the x0xb0x sources the original transistors etc. I used to live with the person that puts the kits together and got to play with one and it sounds pretty much just like a 303.

Check it out:

What needs doing to it? I mean,I used to be a sparky, but 3 phase stuff, not fiddly bits like this. Why can't they just f*cking sell it working properly.

And how much is it,it looks quite sweet.

many lolz, just had a look at the parts list. F*ck that for a laugh. Ain't there a shop or something that builds them for a small fee?

you can pick up a tb for around 700-900 usually. Love mine to bits. I have audiorealism and phoscyon. Audiorealism is closer in sound imo but.... a real tb sounds so much better in the mix with a tune. I find i have to mess around a lot with plug ins to get them to sound good in the mix where the 303 just always does.

Yeah, lucky they picked that number really.

In fact, if I didn't know better I'd think they chose it on purpose.

One of missy elliots most famous tracks (produced by timbaland) uses the first preset that loads up on the mc303.

What? You mean Timbaland just uses presets, and incredibly obvious ones at that?

I don't believe it personally.

Next you'll be telling me he rips off entire pieces of music and passes it off as his own work.

Of course one point that has to be raised here is why it has to be a TB303. Plenty of boxes and software make a nice enough sound in the same vein, why not see what Acid Techno can become by playing with other things that keep the same kind of sound but move it on...

i've got a mate who has bought every kind of emulator out there, constantly says a tb is too expensive. All in all he has spent probably double what a tb would have cost him. He brought round a number of boxes recently to have a comparison, didn't think any of them did the job much to his disappointment. Closest was the xoxox or whatever it is called, but just didn't sound right next to my tb playing same pattern, the accent and decay was off.

anyhow everyone knows acid is green

rhythmtech
26-03-2008, 03:51 PM
anyone that thinks acid is green, purple or yellow is obviously not on strong enough drugs.. acid is clearly a deep red.

anyho xes, id go for an emulator or even a vst and spend my 2000 on other stuff like a top spec computer!!

learn the basics on software first then spend silly money on the toys.

if u already tried audiorealism and dont want to spend full whack for a TB, and realise now that an MC-303 is shite, and dont want a controller.....more drink and drugs money for you!
