fm synthesis

check out some good fm synths

although the example sounds slightly acidy too, maybe its a couple of basslines layered but definately some fm synthesis there

cheers. i'll try to dig out some better examples.
i'd love to know what synth the old skool producers used for this bass back then.

popular fm synths back then included Yamaha DX7's and 100's for what are now classic fm sounds, but have a search on google for classic fm synths

the yamaha's were used by all kinds of dance artists including juan atkins, garnier, orbital, jean micheal jarre too apparently, if the internet is to be believed, they are nice little basic synths though

If you want to get down & dirty with FM synthesis then check out FM7 by Native Instruments.

However, if you want to have a mess around with something free, Oxe is pretty good...

+1 thats defo FM synthesis.

sounds like theres a mod envelope on it as well.

2 operators only though rather than 4 i think.

Sorry guys, but i used to get that sound in about half a second using my SH101
just using the square wave and sub oscillator. No FM used in that bassline i'm afraid.

Pure Analog!

was gonna say sh-101 or pro-1 will do that sound no problem

It's easily achieved with both but the first records I know of with that sound Nude Photo and Wiggin for example where done with a DX 100 and there the ones that got battered by everyone else's sampler.

you are spot on about nude photo there. got that same bass sound. sounds slightly more hollow on nude photo tho.

Well, i hope its a preset, cos only masochists would try to program a DX synth

actually fm8 is quite nice to program

Yes. After about three hours of randomly pressing buttons, I suddenly figured out how to use the damn thing. It was ****ing amazing.

no.. but why would i with fm8 available.

no analogue/digital debate!!

just an easier interface with the same sounds... + more!

I owned an SY77, 6 operator 45 algorithm.

Makes programming a DX7 seem like chil;ds play.

Amazing synth!

FM7 is a wonderful bit of software. Especially when you start pumping audio in and using it as an FX unit.

This was before FM7 existed and there was no other choice

cheers for all the replies.
managed to make a patch along those lines on the virus:

osc 1: sine
osc 2: square pitched up an octave with fm set to about 33%
filter: low pass with a filter envelope

the punch + accent arent quite right but i can see where the sound comes from now.

i found the exact bass sound was used on "the dance" on the b-side of nude photo. frankie bones has put a comment on the discogs nude photo release page:

Those that bought records in 1989, 1990 know that bassline, as Altern 8, Shut Up & Dance (on "Derrick Went Mad") began to use that same bass over breakbeat. Here we have an untapped gem.
