Two to go as EC gets ready to hit the wall. This is a special one, maybe our three favourite Irish artists over the past few years. Certainly the three who have put many an international guest to shame with their hard rocking approach to live and DJ sets. All of these have played live & DJ's - guest list entry for those who witnessed the irrepressible, and occasionally sober, Mr. Sharpe's excursion beyond the turntables.
First up on the night is a man more used to headlining, Donnacho Costello will be be DJ'ing some Chicago and Berlin axis classix and for those of you who were there last time he DJ'd it was full on jacking sounds with gems from the Plus 8 vaults all mixed up Skerries-style. Donnacha has been with us from 2003 when he played may be his only Pleite live show back in Metropolitan on the occasion of our 4th ever gig. He was supported then by Power FM's Brian 'Mad Dog' McGlinchey and Alan 'Pete Best' Carbery. Since then he's played live at Wax, TBMC, Tivoli and no better man to kick it off this week. Apparently considering jettisoning the northside techno retreat for pastures Berlin, Donnacha will be returning to help us send the good ship EC off in style.
Next up is a man who we've known since he was knocking in to Selectah Records back in the hey-day picking up 12"s to beat the band. Fast forward several years, and he's now got his own section in the leading record shops across Europe. And Spindizzy. From Kate Bush -sampling demo CDs in 2003 to releases on labels like Delsin, Ovum, Connoisseur and NRK as we roll into 2008, Brendan has become one of Ireland's leading house & techno producers. A gentleman and a producer, Brendan first DJ'd for us back in June of 2003 alongside the Brothers Power, he followed this up with supporting slot alongside John Selway. After those two appearances, we finally learned to spell his surname correctly he went on to make four live appearances though the years and the venues with the most recent of which being back of April of this year. Flying in from Barcelona, it's always a pleasure to visit Zaytoon with Mr Gregoriy.
Salutations! Sunil Sharpe. Where can we begin with the (always to us) young man. He's had several strings to his techno bow through the years, putting out Anorak fanzine, working behind the counter of Selectah's nemesis, Spindizzy, lecturing on Dj'ing, being one of the most devastatingly super sharp shooting DJs we've ever witnessed up to his more recent involvements with the www.giveusthenight.com campaign and establishing the ManTrap record label with releases form Rory St. John, Ed Devane and more to come. Not to mention no mean producer in his own right with tracks out on Open Source & ToneWrecker records, there is a lot more to come from this man's Davy Jones locker. Never sitting still, we're getting tired just writing out all the things he's been up to, you can hear him DJing everywhere from underground free parties to Planet Love festivals to live sessions on 2FM - truly a man with a record for all occasions. Expect the paint to be peeling from the walls of Electric City by the time he gets finished with his set, also expect him to be arguing the toss over closing hours with a crafty glass laden down with whiskey not far from his arm. Aside from his weak forehand and inability to get a first-serve in, there's not much we can say against him - although we do often try. Sunil Sharpe - step right up.
