Gmedia recreate the OSCar in software

The latest virtual synth from Gmedia is an emulation of the OSCar, the Oxford Synthesizer Company’s two-oscillator hybrid digital/analogue synth, made famous in the mid-’80s by the likes of Ultravox, S-Express and Jean-Michel Jarre.

Like Gmedia’s previous emulations of the ARP Odyssey and Mellotron, Imposcar not only recreates the OSCar’s original feature set but also brings it up to date, with new features like a fully polyphonic mode, key velocity response, additional filter modes and a new effects section.

Check about the real McCoy : http://www.vintagesynth.org/misc/oscar.shtml

Imposcar is equipped with two oscillators each with 13 waveforms and a programmable additive wave matrix. The filter section features nine filter types with Drive and Cutoff controls, plus the OSCar’s unique Separation control, which was used to ‘separate’ the cutoff frequencies of the original synth’s dual two-pole filters, and control bandwidth in band-pass mode (click here for more information on the original OSCar). Further modulation options are provided by two envelope generators and a tempo-sync’able LFO.

Imposcar can function in monophonic, duophonic and 4-, 8-, 12- and 16-note polyphonic modes (as can its built-in arpeggiator), and there are extensive controls to tailor keyboard velocity response and portamento. There are also chorus and delay effects, and pitch-bend and mod wheels.

The plug-in boasts a preset library of over 500 patches designed by users of the OSCar, including Billy Currie (Ultravox), Mark Moore (S-Express), Rick Smith (Underworld) and Lee Groves (Basement Jaxx), but Imposcar can also load settings from the original synth via SysEx or tape.

It’s available now in VST format for the PC, and VST and Audio Units formats for the Mac, and will run on Mac OS 9/X and Windows 98 and higher. It retails for £99.95.
