Edirol had a big stand this year, with a very large multi screen setup for demoing their pro-video products – if you didn’t already know Edirol have quite a range. But our attention was taken by the slimline new PCR-1, the latest in the PCR range. Following on from the PCR-30, 50 the portable USB MIDI interface and controller and PCR-30a essentially the same machine but with the added audio interface for the all-in-one solution, the PCR-1 gives you USB, MIDI and audio in a smaller package. The 25-key PCR-1 measures a mere 1-3/16” thick, weighs under 3 pounds!
To make the PCR-1 even smaller, Edirol have made the keyboard using something they call “S.L.I.M.” (Short-stroke Low-profile Impact Mechanism) which allows a compact MIDI keyboard to maintain reasonable playability and after spending a short time with the PCR-1 I can tell you that it has quite a pleasant positive feel, dare I say it more pleasant than the original PCR keyboard.
This 25-Key MIDI Keyboard Controller offers full 128-step velocity sensitivity and the same control map support as its larger PCR siblings. The assignable controls can be assigned to send any MIDI message. Also, like the other PCRs, it offers 16 onboard Memory locations for saving control maps for your favorite software applications.
The 24-bit 96kHz capable audio section include stereo RCA input/outputs as well as a stereo mini headphone connection which doubles as an optical digital S/P DIF Port. The PCR-1 offers support for Mac & PC with WDM, ASIO, & Core Audio drivers, making it the ideal all-in-one solution for the mobile virtual studio performer.
The PCR-1 lists for $370 and will be available in February.
