fairly rare, but some out there.

the most obvious reason not to deviate from 4/4 is convention, but is that really a good reason to avoid other time signatures?

are there any examples of techno tracks in time signatures other than 4/4 that you think work? how about don't work? why?

I can`t think of any.
There have been some minimal tunes in 3/4 I`ve heard, but other than that I haven`t found any.

so...ancillary question...why NOT have more techno outside the 4/4 time signature?

There are quite a few tunes done in triple time 6/8.
But done with 4 bar structures, which essentially still follows 4/4 structure, like the T.Raumschmiere track that danny mentioned.
Not that wild, but slightly different at least.

I think for vinyl purposes, odd time signatures are too much for the majority of DJ`s to deal with, but with the digital age it should be easier to handle.

6/8 etc is great but get the f4cak outta here man nobody really mixes these tunes out---

You here it from minimal DJ`s more often than any other genre.

Actually, You get a lot of 6/8 in drum and bass, but normally it`s a mid section or middle 8 that swaps to triple time, then goes back to 4/4 after a couple of minutes.

Don't bother mixing it then, just drop it.

i know a couple of ambient techno tracks a while back that had a 15/16 time signature.

and i think some of venetian snares stuff is 7/4 time.

yeah 7/4 is interesting
some early young gods stuff is in 7/4
I tried it a couple of times
but never really got off the starting blocks if you know what i mean

by the way
3/4 is the same as 6/8 innit really?

3 quater notes to every beat right?

15/16 hmmmm sounds a bit silly

actually thats one of the greatest things about the trusty old 303
it's easy to set up 6 or 7 or 9 beat patterns that will run across a 4/4 beat
they kind of re-synch after so many bars ( you do the math )
surgeon does it loads too , not with 303's but similar ideas with synth patterns
it's that old analogue vs software argument again
old analogue step sequencers are great for this kind of thing

I think some of that d+b stuff
is just very heavy on the shuffle and it kind of gives that impression.
well thats my take on it anyway

15/16 hmm

The emphasis is different.
6/8 comes across as if its in 2`s
ONE and TWO and ONE and TWO

3/4 is more defined in threes.
ONE 2 3 ONE 2 3

A mate of mine makes his tunes in 3/4, good stuff. Ball ache to mix but very industrial in sound.
