Getting permission

When commercial mix cds are released how does the dj mixing them get permission for each track to appear on the cd and does the profit get sent to each label used from the earnings?

I've never been 100% sure about this. I know the mail out companies can kick up fuss if they haven't been informed and find out the CD's are on sale with there tracks on... but I don't know. Ask a record label by e-mail I guess.

Yep its true.

Most money to be made for Record companies is by licensing signed trax.

If money was to be made by selling a compliation CD then each record used has to have permission from the record label that has it has been signed too.

The label then sells the right to use this track (licensing) on the CD.

In most cases this is where most money is to be made for the record company.

so how does North, Helter Skelter etc... afford it when they have 12 tape packs of all each 90 mins long of DJ's playing 100's of tunes in total?!?!?

i remember watching a video interview from dave clarke on his world service album just befoer it came out and he was saying he couldnt get all the tracks he wanted but he got a lot of them cleared so there must be a system were you have to clear it with the artist/label whatever but i think you get away with tape packs as there not actual releases but more archives of a night

its a bit of a dodgy legal issue as north etc doesnt come with tracklistings

i dont think so i dont know how it works for mix cds but as tape packs are recordings of a night

if someone sold a recording of one of your livesets it might be different

quiet complicated. I mean if you go bigga records in plymouth there are several local dj's selling mix cd's for £3 to £5... is that wrong in a sense? or just small time so nobody cares?

thinking about it itll probobly be down to whatever label/publisher the cd is released under to get the permission to include the material on the release

technically (and also morally) it is wrong as the DJs have not paid the artists and the dj is getting profit for mixing it and for the artists music

i'd say the better djs are those who just sell the cds for the cost of the CD (and printing out inlays/etc)

I think its criminal that some DJs sell a CD full of only 10 tracks for £9 and I know a few in Plymouth do this.

yeah i think dj's get away with selling mix cds as there not going through any label or distributor as such, there bootlegs freely distributed by any shops etc there sent to, like those m zone ones on germantrance.com there all burnt on normal cds and in wallets with home priinted covers and recorded from a club



heres one for mark e.g actually, how did you go about getting the tracks for your techno transmissions and club experiments mixes? did you have to clear them befoer they were relesed on rumor or did romour have to do it?

also think its criminal when people give out free cds to their friends and even people who arent really good friend of there then charge me for them when I offer to write about htem and do so when I have valued them as a friend before.....

to some people its all about the money/business side of things

the best attitude is to keep it as a hobby i'd say - i know i'll never have a career working in music full time nor would want one.......

thats straying from the issue tho :)
