had to happen at some point. chicago house ranges from sparse and dark electronic to flowery disco; from slow and soft to hard and banging. from jazz to acid. some of it basically is techno with a different name.

so who else is a fan? of what and of whom?

for sh*ts and giggles, here's some interesting links

history lessons:

HUUUUUGGGGGEEEEE HUUUUUUUGGGGGEEEE fan of Chicago house. Basically was all the same thing back in 1985-88 when Detroit were doing their thing too. I was an avid collector of all the Jack Trax stuff back in the day, plus all the DJ International/Trax stuff. You mention K ALexi - OMG he was da man. Anyone remember this:

YouTube - Risque III - Risque Madness 1987 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Au779PSUX64&feature=related)

heheheh

House music lost it's way for me when Garage seemed to take over the sound and when it all started becoming a bit too formulated and gay for my liking.

Over recent years the trend to go back to alot of the early 'feel' of Chicago house by techno/house crossover artists is making me think that this sound is just as good, if not better, than techno.

But then the next day an amazing piece of techno hits your ears and your mind's changed again lol.

PS You all really need to check some of Paul Mac's mixes on this very server:

Hell yeah. Was a massive fan of Sneak in the 90's, went all over to see him play. Derrick Carter too. Really tough tunes.

Saw sneak at Mint a few years ago but was piss poor, no impact and really boring :(

well, i know the hardcore detroitophiles think techno also lost its way somewhere in the mid-90s, so it's probably a matter of perspective. HOWEVER, at the risk of sounding like a nostalgic old fogey, i can't really think of any house that captures the thrill of those early trax and dj int'l releases. really dark, melancholic stuff, full of space and super atmospheric.

but i do also like some of the later, cheesier stuff. and the hard side of chicago. speaking of, think thomas bangalter's homage to robert armani, sneak etc. is worth a mention, even if he's not from chicago

then you haven't been listening to the right stuff :) that's exactly what i thought mate. house music really changed in the 90's and became so far removed from what it was originally about it wasnt even funny. that original chicago house vibe is something else. if youre into anything at all about techno that is funky or even soulful, you really need to be trying to understand early chicago house imho. if however you're only into the harder techno.. hmm... could be quite tough heheh

i'm a little unclear as to when you think this happened. there was a lot of great house in the 90s, particularly on the harder and deep side...dj sneak, green velvet, etc. some of it could basically be techno, but was coming out of the chicago tradition.

over in europe, there were some great labels, like svek, that sort of bridged deep house and minimal techno. e.g.

YouTube - Svek - Conceiled Pattern 4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPi8ufrUqC4&feature=related)

YouTube - Jesper Dahlback - Untitled B2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQHF1cerBQ8&feature=related)

YouTube - Cari Lekebusch aka Mr. James Barth - Pay me in love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_V_j1e3Ui4)

or are you saying it changed after the 90s?

all that early chicago stuff was great. it all had a sparse (plenty of reverb) and sometimes dark vibe to it. i think they were trying to make the disco that was around at the time (which was pretty psychedelic and spacious) using the Roland machines.
adonis was a master....mr fingers too!
Deep House Page (http://www.deephousepage.com/) has some great mixes on there. farley's are definitely worth checking out...

by the mid-90s the scene had blown up worldwide and there was so much shite that it was pretty damn impossible to find the good stuff. so many camp disco loops with a drum loop underneath....

Yes that's a very good call... juss listened to it too .. loooove the wobbly synth -I had faved these two at the same time whenst was searching for the moody side of House ..

this was another classic musical piece really that gave us the deeper edge...

I understand here what you are saying - also paying attention to Slavik's post regarding the Svek releases, which I have to say I really like the second link and have never heard it before.. unusual for 1997 coz that was Club mix hey day with Slacker - 'Scared' (Lonely Traveller) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymS7UmCZXzg) as mainstream moody offerings...

House music was a feeling that for me was represented best on the definitive House Sound of Chicago Vol 2 (http://www.discogs.com/release/213768) .. of which I had a tape copy at the tjme offa my mate >> so have just bought this as a consequence of this thread ...

Juuust as this release had been felt and the likes of House Master Boyz & Rude Boy Of House - House Nation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnERa69atgA) brought madness as far as repetition n moodyness was combined, for the time, then Pete Waterman and his 'Hit Man & Her' series took hold and changed the scene forthwith...

I remember being one of hardly any at all in ma home town who was listening to House during the Jack Your Body 1985 - 1987 era of which the STEVE "SILK" HURLEY - JACK YOUR BODY (HOME MADE), (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7ldCs8dc5o) was the coolest (for me), which we felt was seriously cool, and then BAMM .. off it went into the 1988 Summer of Love ... :icon_arrow::icon_arrow::icon_arrow:

(listen to all of House Nation - brilliant drum track of it's day)

It took me a while to 'get it' but i've really started digging some old house. i'm sorry to use a horrible cliche but the style is so pure that even when it gets cheesy i'm usually sold

but there's been a lot of retrospection (is that a word?) in this thread, how about the new guys? I quite like some motor city drum ensembe stuff (the rawcuts series for example) myself.
