View Full Version : hip-hop startled by dance music

hello to all:smile:. i know it is more to do with electro-house but what do you lot think of r+b acts like beyonce and rap with kanye west and black eyed peas incorporating dance music into their tunes?

kind of cheap don't you think?

Inevitable. No-talent or low-talent hacks with big names have been siphoning off the electronic scene for years and they'll continue to do so. Madonna has made an extremely successful career out of it.

but they were more in the remix side of things, it seems now that every rapper is talking about 808's y'alls.

i mean dizzee in the uk does it as well, but he comes from dance background(grime) not hip-hop.

i like the propose this question to you the drummer:

say the remote possibility becomes a reality and acid takes over the states, would you remix pop acts ?

just curious. or you would never consider such a proposition?

Not a big deal. Dance music took enough influences from hip-hop back in the day.

of course I would remix pop acts !
I'm a musician, it goes without saying.
in fact, I HAVE remixed pop acts, nothing incredibly famous but i have done it in the past.
Jesus jones, Elastica, the Orb, Prodigy, North and South (and more, most of them unused )
There's nothing wrong with making some money from your art.
Remixes are probably the best way to make some cash from music without risk.

but if you're asking me to make a horrible cheesy record that I hate, just for money
then no, the answer is I couldn't do it even if I wanted to.
I have tried, I came to the conclusion that you can't make music cynically.

Another one for henry...

Would you let one of your loops or samples be used in a horrible pop track?

Can understand why people do it. But always kind of kills the original for me. Hearing kanye west blether over the top of daft punk makes me want to break things...

im really coming to the conclusion that music is just music.

for all our high and mightiness about "underground" theres another group of people that love cheesey pop just as much.

if you can make money from music these days then you're a bloody genius.. doesnt matter what style it is.

I'm not a fan of new-ish Black Eyed Peas
In their defense, they have been participants in the house music culture for a very long time.
They all started as house dancers and to be honest
Are super ill when it comes to straight footwork.
Will I Am has also been doing livesets and djaying in LA for a very long time.
The house influence seeping out in their music now
I would more say is attest to his affiliations with Steve Aoki and Junior Sanchez.
So while people may think they are jumping on the bandwagon, they've actually been participants for quite some time.
I still actually remember when Black Eye Peas did REAL hip hop, once upon a time.

what does house dancers have to do with 808s techno and electro.

it is not steeping out, hip-hop has run out coarse, they are looking at new venues but they will fail.

kind of sad really.

WHAT?

we're talking bout a very specific commercialised hip hop here. a genre that generates so much revenue that it will keep going and mutating as newer producers emerge.

underground hip hop is still going strong and inovating.

So true

You dont have to like a certain style to see how it works for its target audience

If you cant listen to a Sugarbabes track or similar and hear what it is about it that makes a really good hook or a breakdown between verses then you arent qualified to give an opinion on it - it may be cheesy bollocks but if you cant appreciate it for what it is then you can **** off calling yourself a musican in my opinion.

Saying pop is shit is a waste of a sentance - it is what it is - How many pioneers in the style of music that we all love have had chart success - remember Donna Summer, The Shamen, Snap, The Prodigy - thats the definition of pop - popular music, nothing more - dont tell me the KLF were not important in the wider dissemination of dance music, dont tell me that 808 state or bomb the bass or happy mondays or PWEI or even bullshit artists like benny benasi have not been instrumental in putting the message of dance music across to a larger audience

US hip hop is dead?
Bro as an active member of the Ayak Fam/Lo-Lifes
Hip hop is far from dead in the states.
It's just if you want to hear quality underground material you have to look for it.
Such as:
Action Bronson
Timeless Truth
Sean Price
Marco Polo & Ruste Juxx just put out one of the best underground hip hop albums I've heard in a long time
Mos Def put out an incredible album
Madlib is STILL Innovating
MF DOOM Anyone!!!!???

And peep the Timeless Truth & Sean Price video for "Priceless"
with a cameo by yours truly.

I'm not a hip hop fan of anything post 2000 however, that being said I can agree with Tony, the US are pushing out some seriously great hiphop- underground and non mainstream of course. I got a couple of CD's while I was in NewYork. Tasty beats and fresh talent.

@Blistanbul: Hip Hop in it's purest form is not dead, by any stretch of the imagination. The stuff you are referring to is Pop fluff and nothing more.

@Tony: Looked it up last night- wicked track and I saw you making gang signs haha wicked mate! More of this.

hip-hop is dead? nonono. i just saw jay-z and he f*cking killed it. one of the tightest, most energetic live shows i've ever seen.

but i do agree up to a point. most mainstream hip-hop today is just horrid, all cheesy auto-tune vocals, lazy rhymes and boring beats. it's all about the decline of west coast hip-hop and the emergence of the throwaway labels from the south.

on the other hand, there's still a lot of great underground sh*t. some are drawing on electronic dance music in innovative, not derivative ways. good example:

YouTube - Common ft. Pharrell "Universal Mind Control" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zo7FpI8MmmE)

YouTube - Mos Def Quiet Dog Bites Hard (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNW8fwTI96M)

Jay-Z? I dunno, that "Hard knock life" tune really killed me off... Just stupid, novelty, gimmicky rubbish designed for the top 40 chart. Tho, to be fair, he did a track called "DOA - Death of Autotune"

SlavikSvensk
19-04-2010, 06:28 PM
i can't say i'm his biggest fan in the world, but i appreciate that he pushes the envelope. i also thought the live show was tight as f*ck.

the production on "DOA: death to the auto-tune" is really great. kanye west may be a colossal d*ck, but he's great behind the boards:

YouTube - Jay-Z - D.O.A. [Death of Autotune] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMuf_ekJhOs)

also like "off that," from the most recent album, produced by timbaland:

Champion gear that I rock, you get your boots knocked
Then attack you like a pit that lock shit DOWN
As I come and freaks the sound, hardcore
but giving you more and more, like ding!
Nah shorty, get you open like six packs
Killer Bees attack, flippin what, murder one, phat tracks
A'ight? I kick it like a Night Flite!
Word life, I get that ass while I'm fulla spite!
Check the method from Bedrock, cause I rock ya head to bed
Just like rockin what? Twin glocks!
Shake the ground while my beats just break you down
Raw sound, we going to war right now

It is a good start as far as the scene goes but you need to think about changing some of your description. The first sentence needs to be changed e.g. "our very expensive stereo we bought etc." I'm afraid that doesn't sound right. Also "The smell of spilt alcohol on the living room carpet stunk out the place." In life you would probably think like that but when writing it doesn't always work.

im really coming to the conclusion that music is just music.

I think music is pretty much what you make it. There isn't a single artist out there that is liked by everyone. If you like hip-hop by itself and don't care for dance music, then just ignore the dance part of it. Focus on what you like, don't worry about anything else.
