Having written about Generator UK Recordings ooooh .. many moons ago .. we have a mini update to keep us up to speed with the latest happenings

Well I must say that having focused on Generator UK recordings about a year ago I am rather pleased to find that, upon re examination of how the label is getting along, there has been an upturn in popularity and after having undergone a rebranding of music policy things are looking very promising indeed for label owner Kevin '3Phazegenerator' and cohort in music Maxx - who are both experienced players from the more London Techno underground warehouse scene ..

They have taken the tech-gritty undercurrent from those early days & melded that with the beats of the moment for which today’s crowd has a general penchant for – finding that area which tends to satisfy most palettes on the dance floor… of recent note they have been receiving attention play from none other than Richie Hawtin – which always makes for good press & undoubtedly makes the general music populace sit up and take notice (!)

So I thought I would ask a couple of easy questions to get an insight into what’s been going on over the last few months…

BEN: After the success of your last few releases will you be concentrating more on other labels as well as Generator UK?

KEVIN: I’m currently doing some remix work for Mutate To Survive. Also have projects for release on Funk You, Reatctiff, Crastin, Startraxx and new label Meld. Ranging from dark slow techno to funky hard techno. Darktones will be doing a feature with follow me on the next Generator UK (16) along with remixes by Skelta and me.
We have also been concentrating on videos with each release in collaboration with Emmosea in Bangkok. Working with the theme of urban structures. Here are the results for the last two.. (see links below)

BEN: Richie Hawtin has been giving you DJ support. How did that come about?

KEVIN: Maxx and I released a track called No Need for Needle with Camarage, back in July. It was a cool stripped back dark minimal track with a pulsing underground edge and some sinister atmospherics. I was surprised to see it in his set in August.
Even more to see him continually feature it in sets over the next 3 months. It has certainly helped my profile and given Maxx and me a new edge to follow with our production based around the style of that tune.

BEN: How did your collaboration with Maxx develop and what are your future plans together?

KEVIN: We first worked together on the Moonlanding vinyl EP back in 2007. The sell out result and terrific feedback we had was great. People still email me asking for the tune. I managed to find 10 copies in the loft the other day, which should satisfy a few folk! From the success of this release we decided to continue with more collaboration projects.
The only issue was by early 2008 I was living in Bangkok and Maxx was in Europe. So we started file sharing using Ableton and sending live updates during the sessions via a chat. The result was an output of 20 tunes over 5 months, most of which were signed straight away. Currently 7 have been Releases and 8 are more already signed to other labels and lined up for release in 2011. We are also planning to start performing together using synced live set with vinyls by the summer.

BEN: How has moving to Berlin affected your musical influences?

KEVIN: It’s opened my eyes to integrating image and sound to a much greater degree. There is a huge amount of performance art here and it’s certainly influenced the inception of my new label Gyre. This will feature sound and image together as downloads. Creating soundscapes and rhythmic textures outside of the normal rules that govern allot of mainstream dance music.
Berlin is such a great place to write music as it is very open to new influences and there are so many experimental electronic and techno bands both resident and transitory. It’s a great melting pot for Europe right now.

BEN: Anything else you’d like to mention?

KEVIN:Check out the current release on Generator UK (15)… (see link below)

Now I know that Kevin has put a lot of time & energy into his music and he has always had an unwavering enthusiasm driven by sense of purpose towards total enjoyment of the sound from a more anarchistic viewpoint – which is reflected in their latest release and has seen Generator UK gets its first Number One in the Techno Best Sellers chart at Juno!
This is something that speaks for itself – so I feel that this latest increase in attention is somewhat deserved & I think that if they hold their ground and keep working the sounds afresh then they will continue to ride the wave of popularity towards the more centrally staged limelight , of which any music maker(s) with ambition would desire…
