I can't help notice that we're all blokes here - maybe I'm wrong and not that it matters. But techno DJing is mainly men too - strong female talent is on the scene but its not very often that you get a mixed line-up unless its a specific event. There seems to be a better representation in the house scene... but when you go out to techno there's lots of girls dancing and there's a few girls on squatjuice.

I dunno. I guess I was wondering which female DJs people had seen and what you lot thought...

This thought has spent numerous hours inside my head aswell. It does not only have to do with techno though but everything that is totally nerdy..

How often do you see any female nerds (be it techno nerds, cpu nerds or whatever).

I think it has to do with the diversity of females contra the narrowness of males. It is so easy for us cocks to focus all of ourselves on one topic but girls (this is just a speculation) likes to focus on several things at once (not going all that bollocks about one thing).

There are a few hardcore grrls out there though.. Like e.g. Pelacha (www.pelacha.com) or Nika77 (www.nika77.com).

its maybe a cultural thing - our culture is userdefined by males, through the male domination history, and females get it harder to adapt to them achines. this cultural level is ofcourse predefined by biological.

blah i wasnt tallking about you specifacly, neither i have said that i am better then all the females in the world.
it is a fact that that male and female brains are different.
i noticed that female do not accept technology as fast as males do.

there's less women in techno becuase
there's too many men!
it's a self perpetuating chain of events
women who enjoy male company have fun at techno parties
women who don't so much get cheesed off eventually
coupled together with the typical male ego always wanting
to be next on the dex and women being inherently more patient and
possibly more socailly aware and perhaps more self concious
it doesn't come as a big surprise that there are no more women techno dj's
how can we remedy this?

i don't really know
but i think the idea of an all female agency has to be good
and buttman before you start moaning about it
have a quick think about this
women through the ages have NEVER really had what they want
men ALWAYS have , some sort of balance needs to be retained
but essentally a non male agency cannot be undermined and that is it's reason for being.

so.....
anyone fancy a pint?

oh yeah and who said
"women like more funky styles of music"????

shame on you!
tell you what if i were a woman i wouldn't want to shag any of you lot.

I'd say this "all female agency/group" idea is good in that it cuts the necessary ruts into this pre-dominantly male subculture.

The problem is then, when you're seen purely as a member of "the girl group" e.g. "Sporty-Spin Spice" and mightn't be credited for your own individual dj/production talents.

Heres a few ladys who are class, but have not been mentioned.

Gayle San - not heard alot from her recently, but I heard her DJ a few years back and she was pretty good.

Paula Temple - she is full on technobang action, she rocks hard and dark.

Kelli Hand - never heard a DJ set, but she has made some pretty offensively banging tunes if you ask me.

And one day, you'll all have heard of Charlotte Pearce, who is a lovely young lady who plays truly inspired sets, all techish styles covered except for cheese, and even has her own radio show.

The only female Djs who came to my mind were Gayle San, Misstress Barbara and Angela Flame. All pretty funky techno style. Don't know if that's just a coincidence, or if it reveals something? Maybe the media likes the idea of women Djs playing funkier stuff, so they're the only people we hear about??
As for Miss Kittin, she plays a lot of shit, but then she plays some wicked minimal techno (e.g. Jacob Fairley - Control Tower) I just hope she grows up soon, realises that the electroclash thing isn't so cool, and then focuses on playing the minimal stuff. I honestly believe she could be a good DJ if she didn't get tempted by the 80s stuff!!

and i aint rascist, sexist or any o that shit.

its like rascism. stop talkin about it & get on with the action that will actually solve the problem...

but, it's a shame this thread has dissolved, as almost always, into another photo gallery rather than discussing, for example, the social, historical, political and cultural aspects of gender-difference, roles, perceptions and responsibilities... ho hum...

Indeed...

Hardly suprising that there are not so many women into this scene with some of the shocking attitudes to women displayed in this thread....

Not wanting to be completely down on this thread though, girls who come up with the goods:

Lucy Lastic (Who runs the VICTIM label)
The Legendary Miss Djax
Cora S. (Who also runs Possible music Distribution and Mental Industries)
Eva Cazal
Gizelle + Rakkit (2 girls who KNOW how to put the boys in their place)

And of course, one of my bestest mates, Esther Ofei...

Anyone remember Kelly Hand?

It ain't about how "Fit" they are, it's the music that counts you shallow little boys.....

but I think everybody agreed that its the tunes that matter - I don't think anybody said anybody was fit but crap or ugly but good... but Downward's joke about the washing-up was funny

peace. we  techno! The best thing about techno is that you can go out and its about the music not whether you've pulled for the night. Shamanism not shagging, init! not saying that techno ain't sexy it is! I think we need to jsut not interpret every joke as being offensive - sorry but that's what blokes are like to each other.

that's one way of interpreting my comments although i said nothing about being offended or not and i've nothing against photos, or jokes, i simply hoped to inspire some more interesting discussion...

i mentioned, amongst other things, gender-difference - perhaps something that, in what is a small part of the world, we are increasingly forced to pretend to ignore at the expense of being "correct". so, what hope of ever understanding or respecting it?

well, funnily enough, i like pioneering djs too, they're just hard to find. pioneering means different things to different people though... as does techno for that matter...

but why are there so few females invloved in actual making techno? last century did equal males and females in almost every aspect of social life, so has in the music. but not in techno.

SlavikSvensk

women/girls comprise a small percentage of djs and producers in all forms of electronic music. i don't think it's because of sexism, but maybe because boys/men are more likely to dream of being stars. or maybe not. i don't know, but i'm curious to...i think techno would be well served by all of us having access to more female perspectives. especially in this thread.

we've got such byword here, it's something like: man is a boy thru the all life. And definitely it's true. more or less, no matter. And I mean that's it. Girls don't have such feelings to still playing with something like we have, I mean. We're bringing the toys from childhood thru the all life, these are changing afterwhile, but we still have something to just playing with and that's it.
Maybe some girls can say they also like it so, but guys are specific in it, at least I am. No matter if the toys are PC games, skateboarding, playing table football, or audio editor and granular synthesis.. I hope U kno what I mean....

my arse! everyones different be they male or female, i'm sure there are many women out there already producing and djing. I think confidence is a major factor here no matter your gender, and unless your pretty confident and believe in yourself i think as a female electronic musician it is VERY easy to be put down and told your shit, or made to believe you will never be able to do it, by the male dominated techno world. I think its a great shame that some guys are only interested in what female producers/dj's look like rather than what they sound like. For me its about how much i wanna do it, i love what i do 110% and that is why i will carry on doing what i do - producing and djing....
