Heya,

I am about to buy a laptop for my live PA (and for e-mails, musicmaking and a little gaming).

I dunno which though!

I have heard that Dell and IBM are the best ones so these are what I looked into most so far.
The most fitting seems to be Dell Inspiron 8600 with Pentium M 1,4ghz 512 ram, ATI Radeon 9600 Pro and 40gb HDD. And it is only 1400€!

Anyone knows if this is a good choice or if IBM (or any other brand is better?)

Check out these guys. They make some really high end laptops spedific for Digital Content Creation and Gaming...

www.savrow.com.

They have just released a pretty high end 17" laptop SavRow Katana (http://www.savrow.com/site/katanaWX.html). From reading their feedback they are higher end than Dell or IBM and probably more focused on creative users.

I am going to get one in a couple of weeks, but am doing research about them... So far so good.

these guys do specialist audio laptops, http://www.sub.co.uk
which may be a worth considering if you are intending to use it for live PA's as you can get all sots of interference and conflicts with non optimised laptops (more so than with desktop PCs).

Please do not get a Dell or a Gateway
They are nothing but trouble
You wont go far wrong with a Toshiba, Compaq or Sony

Dell are notoriously bad for being poorly made, hardware faults or generally going at snails pace

Hahaha! We'll have to see. Im fully coverd for hardware faults, and i back up onto another hardrive anyway, so no major loss if summit does go pop!

My advice - Dont get a laptop unless you are actually going to use it for moving about. Laptops are shit compared to desktops and twice as expensive.

toshiba laptops are great, i have had dell pc's alsoa and never had a days problem with them, older one's i used to sell and refurbish in an old job used to be a pain in the arse to upgrade though, only likeing certain brands of memory and weird things like that

thanks for the advice about dell sarahpvc! I'd heard similar things from other friends, but they don't seem as clued in as yourself!

i currently hav a samsung laptop, my pride and joy,

a complete workhorse, hav win2k3 server n debian linux on it and no problems except the ones i give it!

unfortunately samsung bring out so many models so quickly, it was obsolete and unsupported within 2 months!

No worries
Dell laptops might be fast but they have a slight 'overkill' on the processor, when its running that fast is bound to cause problems later on
