JUSTIN MARTIN SXS REDLIGHT
FRIDAY 19th OCTOBER: 10PM TO 6AM
CRUCIFIX LANE

We welcome one of the more diverse pairings of the SIDEXSIDE concept to date. Two DJs and producers that are from different beginnings... Bristol’s Redlight started out on bass heavy DigitalSoundBoy and counts his contemporaries as Chase & Status, Ms. Dynamite, Jack Beats and Annie Mac. Joining him is San Francisco’s Justin Martin, born out of delicious London deep house imprint Buzzin’ Fly and who went on to establish himself on the label he founded with Claude Von Strokes - Dirty Bird.

Two very different back grounds but their sounds today have distinct similarities, united by a love of low end bass and booty shaking!

JUSTIN MARTIN

As the late Oscar Wilde once said: “life is too important to be taken seriously”, an ethos that Justin Martin is sticking with despite achieving soaring success over the last six years as a producer and international DJ.
Demand for Justin’s skills behind the decks has skyrocketed with his bookings schedule constantly crammed to capacity. With dates everywhere from Panorama Bar (Berlin), Fabric (London), Space (Ibiza) and a full album tour for summer and fall 2o12, its no wonder Justin’s diary is reading like the dreams of a professional raver. Stateside he continues to be a regular fixture at the dirtybird events in San Francisco and beyond.
Music journalists typically describe Justin’s sound as ‘melodic and tough’ with his music encapsulating both melody and emotional depth yet always with enough undeniable ass shaking properties to translate to the floor.
“I’m always trying to find music for my DJ sets that rattles sound systems, but still has enough melody and interesting texture to expand your mind even if you’re sitting at home on a snowy or rainy day.”
He remains as enthusiastic as ever to be involved in the scene. When recently questioned by Resident Advisor on what he’d be doing if he wasn’t a DJ or dance music producer he just replied: “Wishing I was a DJ or music producer.”
By all accounts it’s hard to tell him to wipe that smile off his face.

REDLIGHT

Redlight isn't one to be pigeonholed. Whether it be underground bangers or A listed radio hits, it’s all about doing his thing his way without compromise: expect the unexpected. With tracks in the back catalogue including “Get Out My Head”, “Stupid” and “What You Talking About!?”, Redlight is a rising star of UK electronic music. Growing up in the underground scene helped inspire the move into new musical territories, the need to be challenged and the desire to create new styles. Recent Top 10 summer anthem “Lost In Your Love” is a perfect example of that mix, taking inspiration from the musical backdrop of Redlight’s misspent teens, the eclectic sample sources of jungle and the energy from the illegal warehouse raves he grew up going to in Bristol.

SXS: THE CONCEPT

SIDEXSIDE is a series of contemporary music events, a celebration of DJ’s and the power of shared creativity that drives our scene forward. The concept’s very simple:

Two artists sharing an entire night of music, playing together; side by side.

SIDEXSIDE will create DJ partnerships that’ll excite, challenge and inspire. With an entire night as their blank canvas the DJs have time to push boundaries, to dig deeper into their record collections, pulling out classics, dance floor destroyers, guilty pleasures to hidden treasures.

Redlight has evolved considerably as an electronic music artist over the last decade. It all started with his Mystic Amen jungle smash in 2001; he slid down the Slippery Slopes around 2005, and now in 2009 the man has created a new genre which is getting support all over the globe. This player could well represent "world cup" of electronic music, because every four years he comes around with a new game.
