hey guys,

now i heard that the MOTU828 can be quite instable on a PC depending on what kind of a setup you have, but i would have never imagined that i would be experiencing problems even INSTALLING the darn thing.

Im currently running on a

Pentium 4 2.6GHZ
1 GIG of Ram
Windows XP

I tried installing the software that came included with the 828 and i did everything outlined in the manual. When i did try to open up the Firewire Audio Program, it told me that the device could not be found!

any help would be greatly appreciated!

(and it has been a week since this problem and MOTU hasnt even responded yet. Great tech support guys!)

thx!

If you are running a pci firewire card (instead of a firewire port onboard) the card might not be reading properly. Had the same problem with a firewire HD and swaping out the card for a different brand fixed the problem.

actually yes,

now that you mention it, my motherboard was originally not equipped with a firewire port and i did have to go out and buy one and install it.

do you think simply buying another namebrand one would be compatible? could you please tell me what is the model number of yours?

thx!

I have several cards I also don't remember which was trhe one that had the problem. ......Its really more about chipsets that card makers. Just look ast your card now and find out what chipset it has. (normally printed on the big black chip on the card.. Try to get something with a different chip (although its not normally labeled on the box.. you have to open the package to see it)

you need to make sure your firewire card is of a texas instruments chipset.

the via ones don't work.

make sure before you change the card that you've uninstalled the motu software.

One thing that keeps happening lately is a reverse in the plug and play (which has always been a bit more plug & pray), so after install go back and do it manually in the system devices, under soundcards, etc.. click in yer soundcard and then install manually never let windows search 4 ya...

this is something I posted about m-audio firewire 410... the actions should prove very similar so go ahead...

"....In cubase, does yer sounscard show up on the devices/ device setup/ VST multitrack/ Asio Driver?? A lot of new soundcards r a real shi* 2 install... The way 2 know if it's well installed is if it's asio driver shows up on the relevant drop-down list in sx, if it doesn't then u need 2 re-install.

One trick u should try is to just use a different slot on the motherboard from the one u r using now.

Unistall drivers, swap pci slot, install, re-inicialise win,....

some maudio soundcards require u 2 run a file from the driver cd... this might b called something like xp_post_installer (xppostinstaller.exe)... Again this will install some new drivers.... move 2 the new step..

now this is the tricky part... just go start/ definitions/ device manager/ system/ harware/ system manager/ soundcard controlers, video and games... on this u should find yer soud card listed,,,,

right click on it /update controler/ Install from a list or a specific location/ Don't look. I'll coose the controler 2 install/ SLECT THE DRIVER THEN CLICK DISK.... explore till u get the cd, xp driver, now u should have a file showing, select it, ... update---

do this 2 the several drivers on yer soundcard... or till it shows up in cubase and works,,, U migth need 2 do that a few times (update the drivers and restart windows)...

..."

Also make sure yer firewire connector is active in the devices settings. If u have a Firewire card just swap it's slot that has also worked in some cases!

it is most probably the chipset prob. but doing the above mentioned stuff will help ya pin point the prob into the chipset only!!

thanks for the information everyone!

i finally got it to work! i think it was because i had an NEC chip for the PCI firewire slot.

once again, thanks!

also, does anyone know how i can make my computer recognize the MOTU828 as the main soundcard to play ALL sound files?

I cant seem to get any sound from winamp or realplayer.
Also i dont know how to deactivate my old onboard soundcard in BIOS,

any suggestions?

cheers ;)
