Well, here's the crack.... I'm studying a Music Technology BSc, and for one of our modules they want us to write a song. Now, rather than go the gimpy route of writing some guitar or piano based acoustic piece of Nirvana wannabe trash, I decided to write myself a little dance track. Now, it started off at 175bpm, but then I had a play around, messed with the percussion a bit, slowed it down to trance speed, and I reckon it works better now, to be honest. At the moment it's only an instrumental, but an accomplished singer friend of mine is lending her services at the end of the week to get the vocals down on it. I thought I'd post it up anyway though, cos I've been slaving away trying to finish it off for the past 6 hours, and want some closure dammit!

I'm not sure if this will be anyone's cup of tea, as I wouldn't really call it 'hard trance' as such, more 'uplifting vocal trance' (but with no vocals yet), although I'd say the second half of the tune gets quite dark :D It also sounds slightly bare in places, especially in places I'm intending on putting in vocal effects/washes etc, but apart from the first 32/last 32 bars, it's not too noticable.

Anyway, here we go, in spectacular 64kb realaudio... :eh:

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, as always...

If anyone's even in the slightest bit interested, it was made on a ever-so-slightly crappy PC, running Sonar 3 and a huge host of intrument and effect plugins (notably Z3ta+, V-Station, Kontakt, Bassline, Junglist, Antares Tube, T-Racks, and more reverb, delay and modulation plugins than you can shake a stick at).

real good arrangement and good placement sounds. melody is strong too.

wot i wud suggest to make it better, is maybe a little more imagination on the percussion. a few more original hats, better snare, and some nice sample loops, or percy percussion

this will take it a bit further, as i feel the programming of the percussion, hats etc, make the track sound a little outdated.

but very good, u got the talent, and know ya scales and chords n melodys.

I'm at the University of Hertfordshire. It's alright, but to be honest I've learnt absolutely nothing about music production in my time there, which sounds ridiculous, but it's the honest truth. I've learnt an awful lot about Music Concrete and other rubbish though! :) If I'd gone there in the hope of learning how to make tunes, I'd have been extremely pissed off (as a number of my friends are), luckily I took the initiative and taught myself!

Check the bottom of my original post ;) I've all but abandoned my hardware since I discovered the joys of VSTs, especially Z3ta+. I recommend that anyone who hasn't got it downloads it immediately! :)

Percussion is definately my weakest point. To be honest I find it boring doing percussion and that...I suppose synthesis is more my thing! :) Thats the problem with modern sequencing I suppose - it's all too easy to just copy/paste a great big lump of percussion!

I've got loads to learn still....this is my first ever attempt at anything like this. I was only really introduced to trance about a month ago by a certain member of this forum (cheers Amber ;) ), so my knowledge of the sound is somewhat lacking :) I'm approaching from a hardcore perspective....but I'll have a play with it, see what I can do.... :)

Just as an afterthought...

I did a remix of trance classic 'Skydive' a few months back, if anyone's interested?

http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~morganm/Freefall_feat_Jan_Johnston_-_Skydive_(MX%20Remix).mp3

It's 10mb, and it's hardcore, but everyone who's heard it seems to like it, and it's been played out a few times. I figure some people might be interested what with the nature of the tune and all. :eh:

Well...I posted the once. I posted up the Skydive remix when I first did it a few months back...but nothing since! :) That was under a different name though, 'moron' was already taken, so I expect that might be the cause of confusion :eh:
