Just got myself a laptop and am looking to use it for producing tunes.
I know its not the best base for production, but due to the fact that i spend alot of time away from home, it's the best option for me right now.
Anyway, i need to get my hands on a decent sound card and was wondering if anybody has any suggestions.....what to go for ...what to avoid etc

depends how much connectivity you need, but it's hard to go wrong with a motu 828mkII.

If you're not thinking of using much outboard then you could do much worse than the Echo Indigo. There are a few different versions depending upon what exactly you want to do with your lappy, but they all offer a decent latency and they won't cripple your bank balance (much).

-The 828 is a solid piece of gear but not so small for slinging around with your laptop though..
-The M-audio firewire device is more compact choise OR
-The M-Audio Ozone will give you a good usb audio interface as well as a good controller for soft synths.
M-Audio's drivers have become top notch (after being crap a few years ago)
Plus.. if your tourinng around without any other gear you don't need all thoses ins and outs of the 828. Overkill...
the M-box is also pretty nice!
i just use ASIO 4 All drivers to get my interal laptop sound card down to 0ms when i'm too lazy to lug around my sound card and just want to be ultra portable and jot down some ideas...

any other time i use an m-audio firewire card.

Cheers guys. Its looking like the M-audio firewire is the way to go for me. Nice and compact and just the rite amount of I/O's for me.
Now to find the cheapest place to buy it!!! :hmm:

The m-audio firewire 410 is exactly what i'm lookin for and just the rite price...... now to get my hands on an assignable controller for the copy of ableton i've just got :love:
