I've got a few mates who DJ and all they seem to do is try and find mixes, I then here them doing the same mixes over and over again, saying "listen to this mix"! I'm pretty sure that this is not how to DJ, surely you can't just go into a club and play your "mixes". What do you think?

I know this is a Q for Mark but here's my 2p's worth -
The answer is yes and no - basically you shouldnt ever go to a gig with a rehearsed set (this is my opinion by the way) purley because you dont know what is gonna happen on the night - i.e what the crowd want, what tunes the other dj's are playing etc etc
however during your set you might be playing a track and you know from practising in your room that there is a certain other track that 'mixes' spot on into it and it soundz wicked therefore you mix that tune, and you know that there is a tune that 'mixes' spot on with that tune and so on........
So dj's do play their 'mixes' when playing out but not all the time!
Welcome to the Darkside!

I pre-program techno sets sometimes, when it's a big, big event for me and I know I have to play well + I'm sure that the music I'm going to play is going to work for the crowd I'm playing to. But I only make sure the records go dynamically - i never plan mixes, cause if records jump or you miss a planned mix, you're screwed.
But I have a formula with trance that means I KNOW 100% if a record is dynamically going to go with another even without hearing the full record all the way through (it takes me the best part of an afternoon to categorise my box each week to fit with that formula mind you!). So I don't need to pre-program any of my trance sets.
I can't see anything wrong with having your favourite mixes and trying to redo them on a regular basis. I do this all the time...but just be prepared for things to go wrong!!!

Ahhhh now I see, better stop takin' the piss out of them then. What do you mean by Dynamically by the way.
