DJ Swaps

Whats yer views on dj swaps??

Im tottally 100% dead against them... It completely does my head in when i try and approach a promotor and he's not interested one bit coz he's filled all his events up with dj swaps (i.e. sets he's given people so they will book him or his resident dj at their club)... it just means that the promotor isnt booking the dj because of his musical talent, just so he can further himself.....

as i say, tottally does my head in... and its happening LOADS in the S/W at the moment.... Whats yer views?

Is that what being a promotor is about though? It's about promoting his night or residents and the best way to do this is playing to different crowds.

You have to see things from the point of the promotor who has invested all of his free time and money into putting a night on. A lot more risk and time than spinning records in your bedroom.

Is that what being a promotor is about though? It's about promoting his night or residents and the best way to do this is playing to different crowds.

Well, erm... no. isnt being a promotor about putting the best night on possible for your clubbers? as a clubber myself i want to see dj's booked for their talent, not because the ressie of the club in question gets a set out of it.

Fair play, i'd love to come to one of your nights one day... if they werent 6 hours drive away id be there every time you put an event on, but still you should be interested in putting on wicked parties, with top quality music structure... not trying to sort out yer ressies.

WTF?!?!?!? i would never say that i am better tyhan anyone else, people who know me know that i am true to my word. Thanks a bunch for judging the **** out of me... perhaps i could judge you by your post and say 'dont you think its gay as **** to sort out your ressies instead of sorting out the paying public that enter your events?' Come on.... i would never say i am better than anyone else, its not in my nature....

Everyone can play two records at the same time i agree, but some people stand head and shoulders above others (take mark for example???)

No i see things from the public POV... the point of view which wants to go to good events... not an event which is dominated by the same dj's in circulation because they all sort each other out.

DJ Swaps suck ass...

You should get a set on your own merit, not because you gave them a set at your night etc....

I'm not sure if it's right or wrong... but it certainly is a trend that is becomming more common in the s/w. The problem is that because there are not many hard trance clubs that open weekly who work to book a balance of local talent and big named talent (i.e closure of Country Club and The Monastrey) DJ's have to turn promoters themselves and with limited funds put on monthly events and offer smaller line-ups with smaller capacity clubs and with earlier finishing times (which they do a good job of doing with what's available!). This means that in order to expand your night/sound to more people so you can achieve more regular playing, is to either hope your spotted at your own night and get booked or attempt this DJ swap thing with another event which I see lots of nights doing.

It's sort of a collaberation to help each other but I appreciate that it's causing people to just book people with thought of playing at their night as the motivation. And with these dj-come-promoter nights having more restraints on money and closing time than a big club it's hard to balance your own resident sets, another nights residents and a big name to pull a crowd.

I'm not sure what the answer is, but I think people are so desperate to play as they love it so much they see the DJ swap as the quick fix to get them a chance to play out at another event, to another crowd.

I think the only way out of this from the against DJ swap view, is to be vigilant. If someone approaches to book you on the strength of swapping to play at your night, then decline. I think this will eventually lead to people being booked because they are good DJ's and a crowd would love to hear what the play as opposed to booking them to see what they can get out of them, so to speak.

So DJ swapping? - I still can't decide 1005 - But in principle I do think that the scene would be better for people being booked because they are good, and not because you want to see how much you can get out of them.

Yes you are right..I wouldn't be running a night otherwise.

You are not talking about yourself as a clubber you are talking about yourself as a DJ wanting to get gigs. You are more involved in self promotion than I am as you want gigs and want to make your name as a DJ.

There's more to getting a gig than just talent I'm afraid, don't get me wrong talent is one of the main reasons but there are others. People showing my night support is one of the main reason why I would book someone.

That's all I'm interested in. Ginge and Clipper are residents because of pure talent. They also support me and my night and we rely on each other. Note: I don't DJ so all I'm concered about is the structure of the night also making the night a success and the success of my residents is a crucial aspect of this.

Sorry you took me the wrong way there, you wre complaining that other DJ's are booked due to swap booking etc. I was trying to say is that these DJ's may have pure talent to. The fact that they have this and are residents at a night helped them get a booking.

Okay well how do you get across to the promotor? Mark started a night, made tunes and has had residencies. I'm sure some of his early bookings were through swap bookings at somepoint in his career.

As I said earlier, your not looking at it from a public point of view. Your annoyed that you can't get gigs cos promotors are only interested in swap bookings.

Anyway don't get me wrong I don't just book based on swap bookings, it's just one way that a booking can take place. I always want to and encourage new talent. Just the decision made needs to be practical and benefit the night.

Dj swapping is a bit of a nightmare for someone who has no ties in promoting, i'm pretty sure it's stopped me from getting bookings in the past, and it is quite annoying. When it comes down to it though, it is mostly talented dj's involved in it anyhow, so it makes it more bearable - if bad dj's were being circulated, then it would all lead to disaster.

I think international dj swop is good idea , where both dj's are getting to play to a totally different crowd

but within the local scene can cause things to become a bit stale

It can but if done properly then it won't. It depends how inbred the scene is.

It's a good way to get a new crowd in without forking out for another big name DJ. It benefits both nights and creates a stronger scene.

Anyone else here run a night?
