The 'Bottom End' Thread.

OK it's the most important part in music. Bass, Kick, Sub - the stuff that kills you on the floor and make you have babies when you hear it :lol:

I thought it a really good idea to devote a thread to it.

One thing I tend to do at moments when I just don't know... is take the bass right down on the desk and bring it back in until it's right...

if it's not right, then off we go again on eq, plugs etc..

if it is right, then let's go!

i saw a calyx (d'n'b) and teebee video once where they used a sub and used that to check whether the sub of their tunes matched 'REFERENCE' tunes with bass/mixdown they loved. plus touching the speakers or the 'cones (?)' in the speakers may be useful as well, in order to feel if it thumps enuff. i'd deffo say REFERENCING. i once heard that in loads a techno records the bass is below 320 Hz mainly --> that made melook at tracks in a freuency analyzer and it really seemed to slope down very very often at that freq. when i tried it myself i noticed i could make the bass as loud and fat as i wanted, if i then put a lp filter to make this massive bass only play beyond say 320 hz aprox it would be mahosive like the bass of so many records and not clouding or muddying up all the rest of the track. won't be nay help to you mate, though, i reckon. i'd say do a search on bass/ sub whatever over at dogs on acid the grid. that's the bass place, imo!!

I've seen the same vid as loopdon mentioned ( over at drumnbassarena ) & use a similar method when producing ( I also produce dnb ).

There is much that can be done with the bottom end these dayz.
I like to layer parts of diff kick drums and synth pads to get just
one unique personal kick/bass combo.

I dont know of any specific resources
just think about it a lot and work out ways
to use what you already have in a different way.

main thing i reckon is to CUT everything that is getting in the way of the MAIN sub bass instrument/sound. anything that competes with the raw low end sine tones should be CUT out... I'm talking under 100hz here. that goes for cutting the bass on all aux efx too...

also anything that isnt remotely related to bass should be cut way higher.
