importance of newability when playing hard trance

I read on hear before that mark doesnt very often play old tunes. hakka metioned newability on another post and corbzy commented on it on a review of yoshi's cd.
from a clubber and a djs point of view how important is this ??? clubbers seem to love it more when a dj plays tunes they know, where as those who dj dont and seem to put great emphasis on this ?? " its all old tunes syndrome"
can a set made up of a few classics and 6 month old tunes, broken up with a couple of new uns, be better or worse then a set of complete upfront proms and one offs ??
surely the ambience of the set is the most important thing ??

I think a dj will always prefer to play his newest stuff but from a clubbers point of view its always good wen u hear a classic dropped :dance:

i like to play my new stuff, but generally i'll try and fit in something that the crowd knows and loves, but isn't tired of yet.. :)

lucky for me... due to my location i'm usually the first one with the newest releases.. :rambo:

Nah I don't mind oldies for shit....I was just commenting on Yosh's CD cos I thought it was like a demo of new tunes, I drop classics all the time :)

to be honest in a typical club the majority of people aint going to know a lot about mixing and new tunes etc!

id say when i first started going out id love the tunes a reconised the most, now its a case i prefer new ones i aint herd befor!!

Obviously when your playing out, you want as many new and upfront tunes you can get for the people you know that will be looking forward to hearing new material, but for me (who has little money) a week where I don't recieve any promos, is also unlikely to have bought new tunes and will have to resort to playing older tunes.

But then this is all the politics of DJ'ing, as long as you try your hardest, please the crowd, do your job well, then you have suceeded and you are a DJ.

Things like this only matter to the people who are massively involved in the scene and more in depth topics like this come into play. For the majority of the crowd are people who don't really know what the tunes are etc etc.

i find m zone can play alot of the same tunes some new some classics i guess its about mixing old with new

as a dj if you want to play old tunes in a set its up to you,if you think its good do it,if not dont bother. evrey dj is different so its an individual desicion. imo

It all depends on how clued up your crowd is as to how recent tracks are. In our kind of music you can get away with playing tracks for a lot longer than genres like trance simply because our music is less heard. You need to do research on where your set is and what the crowd are like.

As for CDs, i'd say it's risky, but one or two classics certainly don't hurt, as long as they fit.

I prefer 2 play new tunez but you've gotta drop a couple classics aswell!! ;) ;)

when im djing out i always like t odrop a couple of classics , when i do my radio show s i always play some classics too but when i do cds its always upfront stuff

dont think old tracks sound good on cd unless its real special and kinda been forgotten about. not an abused track.

i think that as long as your not playing what all the other djs are playing your doing a good job!! but for me i like to mix new tunes that will one day be classics!! as well as classics that are at least a year old!! that way no one gets bored of your tunes!! Sometimes there will be weeks where you don't like any of the new tunes out, so you have to go to your classics!

I personally think its having the right track in the right place, and sometimes there is always and older tune which is perfect for it. I'm very structured in my set thinking and if my more newer tunes doesn't fit I will look back to a great tune to fill it.

Recently I've been thinking of using Angel of Death (Hennes & Cold mix) and The Sound of Rock by Hennes & Cold in my hard style sets as they are both hard and old tunes which still have a lot of authority.

Obviously there is no specific way forward with how you do your sets, but in my opinion there will always be older tunes that can't be ignored in my box amoungst the new!

the crowd point is a good one too. I remember listening to a set at the grove by Ben Eye, and he plaued Shokk - Folie-a-duex, which is great tune. But some clubbers were moaning that it was too old.... so this point sort of does matter.

I guess there will always be a clubber wanting everything knew and another that likes a bit of new and old. Just play it how you want to play it.

Finding the right balance is the key I reckon!!

Not to many classics so it boarders on a classic set ( unless its on New Years Eve or B'Days) and not some many new tunes that no ones heard them all before.

New tunes are not always the best tunes but a great tune is a great tune no matter how old it is.
