effecting hardware with software

bit of a newbie question i spose but....

is it possible to effect a hardware synth with software effects?
via ableton or something similar?

if your hardware has digital outs and your sound card has digital in / out you can set up a bus with your DAW and have effects with no latency if your using an external effects box

of course this is theoretical because i have never tried it

Actually you'll probably still get some latency, we run external effects in mixer inserts on the computer and get sutble but noticable latency on the analogue inserts and low but several samples latency going through a digital effects unit ... means you have to compensate if you want to mix the sound back with it's original uneffected self otherwise you get flanging.
