Never really listened to any of his stuff and always hear so much about him I figure Im missing out. So what albums/releases of his would people particularly suggest to get hold of?
Cheers :)

As im not massively into Minimal, I would suggest you listen to his Dex, EFX & 909 mix CD. Its the CD that got me into Techno!
It is a timeless classic
DE9- Closer to the edit.
TRUE... it's an essential. Minimal, but much more dancefloor-orientated than his more recent stuffQuote:

Another vote for Dex, EFX & 909 mix! Superb stuff. :cheese:
Still not heard DE9 yet though. Really must check it out some time soon.
I always found the DE9 Closer To The Edit a liitle bit hollow for my liking, in that I prefered the more dance floor orientated techno to be found in Dex EFX but I do not deny the skill and idealogy the mix stands for.
Maybe now with current trends being as they are I would probably like it more now
Is DE9 a tad minimal and less dancefloor material then?
I really have no idea.
In a word, YEP
When Richie gets going on the DEX, EFX & 909 around track 35 with "Join in the chant" and "Oh yeah - Yello" he absolutely KILLS it
Plastikman - Sheet One
DE9 isnt really dancefloor techno for me. More the sort of thing i'd listen to at home.
Some cracking tracks on there though and great mixing...if I remember correctly he's using an early Final Scratch.
Still haven't heard Dex eFx and 909 though - we'll have to do a swap Si
also check:
fuse - substance abuse
circuit breaker - trak-x
plastikman - panikattack
system 7 - alpha wave (plastikman acid house mix)
download that essential mix 2001 from sankeys aswell.
now thats a mix.
how could we forget! one of the best moments this year was hearing this tune being played at the winter olympics.Quote:

In reference to mix cd's: I am surprised no one mentioned the MixMag Live! mix cd from '94 or '95. There are some ****ing classics on that CD and anybody into acid house should check it out. If heavier or busier techno is your thing then you should check out the first DE9. I wasn't really into Closer to the Edit but I thought Transitions was done really well. Even though his track selections may not be my top choice, his mix cd's usually go above and beyond (conceptually) what most people put into a mix cd.
As for albums: Sheet One is a good place to start, and work your way up. :)
I'm looking forward to the documentary that Slices is putting out. Richie's an interesting character and there are those who love him and those who hate him. I'm curious to see if the documentary stays relatively netural or leans to a certain side of that debate. Regardless of whether people like Richie Hawtin or not, I'm sure it will be a welcomed history lesson. Speaking of documentaries, I just saw High Tech Soul last week and it was pretty impressive for the most part.
Dex FX is a true classic... definitely get yourself a copy of that badboy.
Also Consumed is one of the most evil albums I've ever heard, not normally into the minimal stuff but that worked for me...
...oh, and minus orange is a personal favourite.
Exactly what i'd say about Closer to the Edit - even if you don't like the tracks then it's worth a listen for the quality of ideas, production, mixing...in general everything is a cut above 99% of other mix cds :)Quote:

yes and yes.Quote:

sheet one. musik. consumed. artifakts. all essential and deserving of good sound systems in dark rooms.
btw, you can listen to all the plastikman stuff @ plastikman.com
DE9:Transitions is quality, although mainly for home listening purposes imo
Cheers for all the responses! Will get on with checking it all out
Thats his own track Minus Yellow takes the bassline and chica-chicaw bits from yello-oh yeahQuote:

everything in minus orange is from the original Yello track. all he did was rearrange it.Quote:

there is actually an interview with Hawtin on the current Native Instruments site. Not a bad read.

I've got a Peacefrog cd with his rework of DBX "Losing Control"...not very good, but the cut 808 kick he's thumping is stupendous. I just loaded it into the ol' Akai the other night for some new life.
when he created the probe label, that was one of the defining moments of my life. like the 'spawn' (bwahahah) of the devil. i have everything he ever did on probe and plus 8 and am proud of it too. did anyone get the cartoon + 7 inch thingy - and the condoms - chrissi and i have 2 (matching his and hers hehehe!!!!)
:)
@ the first DEMF +8 had a booth set up and alot of the time Hawtins mom was working it. She had these killer chocolate chip cookies she had made. I asked her how she made them(as I like to cook) and we chatted for a good half an hour about food. When I turned to leave she said hold on a minute and turned around and rummaged through a box and pulled out the Alan Oldham comic and 7" and said here you go. She is super-facking-cool.Quote:
